ok now im starting to get the hang of this longboard caper...i need some answers.

im a back foot surfer and cant change it,yet i have had no major dramas riding shortys for years..i paddle, i pop up...back foot on the tail, presto and surf.

on a longboard,i paddle, i pop up and i take a step back towards the tail(generally just in front of the side bites) if she starts to bog i take a step forward and continue. well i have been trying to get my back foot a bit further back so it sits above the big fin. when i do i can swing the board around faster yet it bogs to easily and i generally cannot salvage the wave(i have gone through the back off it)

so where is the best back foot position for turning and still keeping some drive and speed?

I can't help much. I'm a front foot surfer. I can generate speed with the back foot on the midpoint of the board. But no turning from there!

Back foot over the side biters works for me. But I like long drawn-out turns on the Point Breaks down here with open faces. I run out of speed at the end of a big Round House (try hard Drop Wallet), and I'm back in the pocket, stalled, rising up the face, sometimes on the foamball, waiting for the speed to return, and then take the drop into the next section of the wave... (repeat 2 more times on a good wave, and kick off! ).

let the board pick up speed before you jump up.....then swing into the turn straight away...even start the turn as your getting to your feet...its a real pendalum thing...as your coming out of the turn take a step or two forward for trim...then you should be on the fall line and gaining speed....jumping up and steping back will just bog down...oh and you need to be on a good board

arkgee i said it a wee bit wrong after reading your answer. when i pop up im pretty much mid board(my pecker swings in the centre off the board) so i do gain speed first, then i step back and swing. its just i like how quickly i can turn the board when right over the back fin(it just ends up a fail though)

so is it just a longboard thing and i shouldnt try and put my back foot that far back for the board to be at its best?

its all about feel and trim and timing. you should be using front and back foot, however you need compression and extension as well as rotation.
three key areas to good surfing no matter what you surf. with longer boards add in movement

chrispy, i should meet up with you and get you to bring a normal skateboard and show you what i was taught by a australian junior coach who was in the alley board riders when i was a member. was a game changer for me

cheers

yeah you can turn from back there but its kinda like nose riding you have to get the weight off pretty quick to get back into trim...thats why a good longboarder allways looks like a twinkle toes....weight and unweight...if your not trimming...your moving to the trim spot.

Sounds interesting. I've been meaning to take my "shorty skate" out for the last few days.

Get that footwork sorted Chrispy and you're well on your way. watch the guys in the flicks especially the log riders and note the way they step through turns and trim. to ride a longboard you need to move on it.

Shame you sold the log Chrispy because I reckon riding that would have probably been better for you to get the footwork going. It seems that you are pretty determined to get it right. Keep at it.
