Chrispy I've got an Olympus 790 SW , water proof to 3 meters and shock proof , supposed to be able to drop it 1.5 meters haven't tested that as yet . Picture quality is not great but neither is my photographic ability , so a good match . does videos and pics .

It's the camera the dog drools all over in the ad .

Wifey has a canon , I 300 I think . That thing can take some quality pics .

Hi Chrispy,

The sports camera like a go-pro or rd32 is great for on-board video because they have a wide angle lens so they can capture the action without being able to look through a viewfinder. Easy to mount on a board and reasonably priced too.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RD32-HD-720P-Sports-Action-Camera-Underwater-20M-Car-Bike-Helmet-Black-/261020999563?pt=AU_Security_Equipment&hash=item3cc6105f8b#ht_2474wt_1163

Normal cameras with a view finder are good for everything else.

You had the best one, the top of the line Lumix are pretty good. they record in full HD video and are very good still cameras. The Panasonic water proof one is pretty good to, no offence Tassie but the pic quality ****s on the Olympus, or did when I was looking. but if you want water footage the No Pro Is probably the go, haven't seen the ones CMC mentioned or the contour ones.

Go pros are **** for normal photos.

The wifi thing looks insane on the ions I reckon. I was talking to a bloke the other day from the company who gave me a rundown. Quite a few levels up from gopro in every way.

A go-pro is a great addition to any camera collection but not as a camera in its own right. We use our GP to take lots of pics on land in the water - the burst mode and time lapse options are unreal. I made a handle for it from the plumbing section of bunnings for $6. Bargain. With the GP you really miss the option of zooming in or out. They also have a small lens which needs a lot of light to capture the best results. Low light shots suffer because of this big time.

The sad thing about a lot of those water-proof cameras is that they never seem to last even if you wash them after every use in fresh water. Pretty much everyone I know who has had one has had problems no matter the brand or model. A real shame.

We have a canon powershot sx210is which has lots of manual functionality and takes amazing shots with great zoom options. It does not go in the water sadly but for everything else its a great camera that fits in yr pocket.

I bought one of these years ago:

Very durable, good o-ring protection on the hatch, looked great. Shame it takes crap pictures and in the snow, cold batteries means it shuts down after 1 photo.

Mine was useless junk.
