ok here goes..

for the past 1 1/2 year I've been surfing my 9'2'' allrounder with a thruster set-up. I'm pretty comfortable on this one down at my local (Isos) and on weekends when I venture down to Avalon and sometimes further south to Yallingup.

Also, I've taken my McT Fish 7' out a number of times (local scarbs + avalon + down south around yallingup and Bunker Bay) but I have realised that my skills are prob not there just yet.

Im therefore looking for a board that would work as a 1/2 step down from my longboard to the fish. My neigbour recommended a 6'6'' McT Egg ($1,195 for new) http://www.mctavish.com.au/surfboard/egg but thougt that I would also check here..

Any input / recommendations..?

If you are having probs on on a 7.0 dont go the egg imo.

I would think that you need to be looking at something in the 7'6" - 7'10" range - enough so that you can feel the difference, but not so much that you loose on the paddling and stabilty benefits of the longer board.

Changing boards can make things more confusing as it takes time to adjust and get used to boards. None of those locations really sound that suited to a fish style board for different reasons. I have ridden eggs and they are a fun easy neutral board to ride. I would either persist with your existing boards for a few more sessions or an egg /mini mal (6,6 sounds too small though)

Well said,I've got three, the UFO I love,a Redline I dislike and a brand new Fireball ridden five times,it never gets a look in,so I'm going back to a two board quiver keeping the UFO and a new to come.

Are you on a Mct Fish or Carver Fish ?

Either way, if you are struggling on this board going to a smaller egg is a MAJOR mistake IMO. The egg is a board you may buy if you already have a full quiver and just want something different (very different)
I would suggest a nice mini mal around 8ft and as you are obviously a Mcfan then you would struggle to find a better board than an eightball at around 8x22x2 3/4 (depending on your weight of course)

yep bb. you are so right about that board. if i wasnt lazy i would paste your post about it in another thread. i was going to ditch mine, but have deciced just to change some dims with the egg, bb again you are right, a fun board, but i would only buy another one if i had a 7 board quiver. mmmm it is a super fun board though mac you too are right,it is hard to change from board to board...guess thats why the 8ball rules supreme in my family

Carver.

Hey dwad - a carver has more rocker than the board he is already struggling with and as such is a harder board to paddle / slower to paddle into waves / needs to be surfed closer to the curl (in the pocket) to maintain any sort of speed / is a shik board in small mushy surf and ..............so on.

When I surfed the carver I found that if I lied further forward so the nose is just popping out of the water it was much easier to paddle into waves, when I first paddled it I couldnt get close to getting into them, as I was too far back.
The one I used was a 7,6.

Most 8'0 mini mals are in now where land. That's why McTavish introduced the 8Ball, to make a real mini mal that actually works.

Most 8'0 minis are a confused combo of short board and longboard. The 8Ball is a decisive 8 foot longboard.

I would also consider a 7'6 McT Sumo.

Hooksey, I was in the same boat about 10 years ago. I was a froffing bodyboarder for about 10 years before that. But I eventually grew tired of it.

My wave knowledge and judgement was spot on, and I was a very competent body boarder. Shared waves, loved surfing, loved surfing with all surfers.

But, I was struggling with the jump down from a McT 9'1, to a Keyo 6'6 Egg. Then I got a really full volume 7'0 Merrick Single Fin, and I was away.... Flat rockered. Paddled almost as good as a malibu. And a 5 year love affair with single fins began.

But 5 years into things, I was really happy with my progression, the old school way. Malibu, then big volume single fin, smaller volume singles fins (about 3), then a beautiful purple fish with timber skegs. I was in heaven.

And not much has changed really !! I still have all of those lovely boards... I'm a collector.

www.cisurfboards.com/surfboards/legacy-lineup/msf/
My board is the 7'0 x 21"1/2 x 3"1/8 that is listed here. When I asked for it, it didn't exist in the computer models. They got back to me pretty quick, and they were very confident they could do it, but they were honest and said they need some time to source a suitable blank, and review the design. 8 weeks later my baby was born. I loved it straight away. It was the missing link between the 9'1 and 6'6. A couple of crew in Avalon had a try, and the feedback was sufficient enough to confirm that it could be offered. And the 7'0 as listed on the web-link above, is actually a result of my request. So I was actually responsible for helping out the "up size" model. And today, the 7'0 x 21"1/2 x 3"1/8 is offered on the official CI site, and yes, it's the USA site, and CIA (CI Australia) do a great job too.

Surf rage highlight moments while bodyboarding....

Had less than a handful of "unsavory" incidents in the surf in over 10 years. Sure, I had a maybe 100-200 blatant drop-ins... But I would usually just paddle up next to them, and very politely say something like, "I know you saw me, just don't do it again". That pretty much worked every time. Failing that, on the second time, I would scoot up behind them and grab the legrope - instant face plant !! But they had been warned!! Coped an absolute verbal bashing only once, and I simply said, "oh, f@#k off, that was your second drop in", in a serious tone 10% sarcasm joke. And that was the end of that... no trouble at all...

I even had a fair time surfing at Maroubra before work at Sydney Airport. Only 1 incident early on, actually with another bodyboarder.

What I'm saying is;
A low rockered single fin paddles really well, and there's nothing to confuse you with the fin set ups. It's a single fin !

You'd also have plenty of fun on a 7'6 single fin from someone like Greg Brown. With tints of course! Maybe throw in some side biters. But keep your side fins nice and small at first.
