hi im a 17 year old girl, roughly 5'6 and 50kg.
im looking for my first board to get into surfing.
i am thinking a mini mal or something alike to get me started :)
so my questions are:
1. what is the best board for beginners
2. good brands
3. looking for a reasonable price
4. any notable features i should be looking for in a board?

thankyou!

Hi and welcome,I'd say an 8 footer for your first board look for something around the 450 mark just an average quality board to get you going cause your going to ding the board due to learning,at this stage forget high end brands. 8.0 x 22 x 2 7/8 would be a good start.

As what Mac said. At least 7'6 long. 21"1/2 wide, and 2"5/8... That's about as small as you want, to start with. But the Size Mac said is better. Easier to paddle, more stable to learn on.

Sanctum seem to be an OK cheap option. So many cheap end brands though...

There's a lot to be said for soft boards when your getting started. They're safe & hey, they're made for people beginning.
You can pick them up cheap as well, here's a couple of brand newy's

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SOFT-SURFBOARD-SOFTBOARD-SHAKKA-8-foot-Beginner-blue-/271244448361?pt=AU_Sport_Surfing&hash=item3f276dd269

Found searching, "soft surfboard" on ebay. You could probably find a supplier in your state.

I'm with Mick on the soft board option. I had a muck around on a Surf school one the other day and I was completely surprised at how good it was.

Width off board I would suggest 21 at the widest for your size, unless you have monkey arms.

If you mention what region and state you are from, someone might be able to steer you towards a couple of specific options in your area. In the meantime, the 'surfing' category on Gumtree.com.au is also a good place to browse, especially if you use the right search filters.
The advice above is all pretty good. As well as the right board, some surf breaks are a lot better than others - especially when starting out. Anyway stick with it - you will have a ball.
Cheers, Dave

Cheers mate...I was thinking 8ft is probably a bit big, she's 50kg & 5'6...but didn't consider arm length (monky arms lol). The 7 footer would probably be the go & yeah they surf a lot better than the foamie I learnt on a ummm few years ago
