ok there are boards I surf and just don't like point blank- gone. life too short to ride unlikable boards.


but most boards go like this. feels good


riding -yeah going pretty good ,' oh what was that'. its nothing the money parting side of the brain tells me.


yeah its good. but the more I surf the more that tiny fault becomes a virus until I just go that's its good bye.

that fault could be me, the board or both. doesn't matter



the more you try and find a fin set up you like the less the chance of it being keeper.




ive been wrong about feel good under the arm boards but never feel bad under the arm boards


I hate getting a custom that wasn't quite what you ask for, feels bad but what do you do.

I reckon a 1/3 for customs for me. but hey when you get that good one.


and for me . it does matter how good a board is I kinda get bored with after a while. need a new challenge.

shortboard max lifetime for me and record 1 year and that was a burton twinnie that actually had slipped on the shaping machine.


I did have a run of mf model boards that we tweaked/ tuned for me but im not that dedicated to sb's anymore

some make out like they are listening but their not. others just get it wrong or can't remember and didn't write things down . or its not detailed enough to the factory workers

or the vision/concept just didn't work.


going outside proven designs spells danger a lot of times but it can be a good pay day

Nice post LL. I used to move boards on more regularly but in the last 5 years I have found a few real keepers that have I have kept to they died - sweet potato and a CI Pod. That Pod was awesome and often thought about replacing it. Now this Nano I have seems to go well in anything from waist to double overhead. But I find that now I am surfing good quality waves most days that it's time to think about a more high performance step up board. Last attempt at one of these failed miserably so it's left me in a delimia. I don't need boards that generate speed anymore - I need boards that can handle speed. Been looking at what the good guys have been riding but they are 20 kg lighter so not the best thing to compare with. Decisions decisions decisions !

I would have thought that was a fairly easy call. Pick your length, single into double, perhaps a little vee if it's a big step, rounded pin, narrow-ish nose and a little thicker and a little wider than your everyday board. Get a board from a down south WA shaper. They have indo boards wired.

I just put money down on my new up north/indo step up.


It was my fifth board in 11 months and 3 board in two. Don't tell the wifey.

Good advice there Drip - but I went that way last time. Wanted to keep board fairly short relatively speaking for volume so it can still be pushed around n with some but it failed. Maybe it was the shaper - surely it's not me !

Go longer. Long and thin is faster than short and wide and surely you can throw a 7 foot board around plenty? How big are you? My go to boards for 5-6 gnaraloo have been 6'10-7'2" for years and I can rattle off hacks down the line while still pulling those "omigod" high line runs and ride a barrel. If you mean bigger waves again, lots of my mates ride 7'6" as there "I am a hero and take on anything board" at gland and ulus and a few big wave spots through Java and Sumba. But I would have thought a semi-gun in 6'10"-7'2" would be a perfect step up. This is the board I have on lay by and the sort of outline I was thinking of. The big boards lose the small wave derived bottom conclaves though, and are no where near as chuckable.

It all started at 6.45,picked up LL back streets to snapper it was good at LM,LL said its got morning sickness head to Byron we can always come back.
Wategos not great the Pass crap,breakfast then factory,had a look at the Splice,its a week away,both LL and I talked boards,I talked about dropping down
to a 9.8 Noserider from my current 10 footer.LL just talked stuff I switched off,not sure what he was talking about or up to,couldn't do another back street
drive to snapper so dropped LL home,didn't even get wet what a journey.

Less of a beast to handle in and out of the water it would drop 4 inches and I would also drop 1/8 width and thickness.
With this in mind I would also drop the 9.8 sunset board from the quiver,you mite see both on gumtree soon

but a noserider should be big and stable. why did you get the original size to start with? i still think you are wasting your time with those type of boards and should get a big bobsled or carver....seriously.

Yes indeed. I have the Outer Islands coral reefer as my gun. It's 6'10 and nice n long n narrow. Anything that thing doesn't handle is too big for me these days
. I just want something in the middle that goes good from head to double and is still relatively performance driven. The 6'6" I have is terrible. I am around the 100kg mark. Fluctuates with Bintang consumption. Very paddle fit though.

not because the ff was bad by any means but I think this bqs will be better. the performance of the 7 ft,i keep forgetting its 7 ft , is so good

so logically the 6 fter should be off the dial. hanging out for this little number


leaves me with a 9'6 log , 7ft bqs, a 6'4 mr bushranger( unridden yet) and a 6 ft bqs coming.


im not even sure ill need the mr yet.

i have pulled into a few inside waves on the bqs at the alley no probs

The problem you'll face is riding more conventional non Tomo boards is that they just don't have what a modern planing hull has and allows you to explore different lines on the wave face at will.
If you're like me you have no desire to surf wsl lines.
The board you want for good waves is a Tomo V4 in fst construction, which has the right dna but handles size in a great length.
