on friday when i go in to finish shaping the beer garden board
i will then sit down with steve to hear what sort off board i will be getting made for me....
i have never gone and done this before,as in letting the shaper craft whatever he pleases and i have no say in it.
i was talking to steves wife and she said to me why dont you let steve just shape you what he thinks will be the best board for,i thought she was joking at first.
then after lurking in the factory for a few hours, steve asked had i decided what i want.....i had changed my mind 10 times that arvo alone...thats when i said, mr del rosso, when i come in next week,i want you to have everything designed ready for shaping, its all up to you mate.
so come friday i will be paying for a board that i dont even know what it will be(besides a longboard)
has anyone else done this before?
mr del rosso said that its something he does quite a bit of with his customers.

Your not lazy mate I'd call it smart

Guy's like Steve know their sh-t after many years of shaping,go with the flow I'm 100% it will be a ripper of a board, even let him decide fin set up.You relax suck a beer and come up with artwork.

+1
And he prob has a good idea of what you want anyway, I'm guessing you've been talking your head off about different boards.

And it gets better everytime based on your feedback of how it felt. Nothing beats the shaper knowing what you ride, playing with variables and you being able to relay what you felt. Not necessarily why you think you felt it.

Of course there are general parameters that you know work. For example for years I said to a guy making me a first board, whatever your standard nose width is add 1/4 to 1/2 an inch for me, I guess I surf off the front foot a lot. Most boards now are wider in the nose anyway.

A certain shaper I know and I had a scientific theory that in many cases the actual ability of a surfer was inversely proportionate to their attention to minute details. Ie the guy that claims that the 1/32 of tail rocker that ruined his board was more of a reflection of ability than the board. Most good surfers can learn to ride anything.

Let the good guys run free. Let them know what you have been riding, if you liked it or not and let them see it if possible and allow them to do what they do.

That's funny Chrispy.
I sometimes have a variation of this by ordering a McTavish board without physically sighting it. The 9'6 Occasional Pin is a good example. I didn't really know all the finer details on rails and rockers. If effect the shaper has created something they liked... Turns out I like it too.

cmc, this will be the point, beyond the fact he makes wiked boards ...he is one super cool human being, takes alot for someone to impress me as much as steve does
and that was way before the bgboard

no no no, getting people to do stuff for you and make them feel good about it is a sign of great laziness. i think about how to get people to do my bidding, but that's about as far as it goes- i'm too lazy

Yers mate - with Ronnie G ..... he's been doing his nice shizz for years and knows what to produce
Should be okay with Stevie Del Chrispyman - you own one of his boards , and been in there a bit of late so he should have a pretty good clue as to what you want in your new Long girl
Stick it on E-Bay if you don't like it

Maybe get Mac to wax it for you Chrispy. He has some pretty nice finishes from what I have seen. Mine you he does get an awful lot of practice

I think its great that you are doing it this way Chrispy - just make sure you are 100% honest with him and it will be sweet as bro
