its hard to change things when it starts from your mind mate. when you notice you are doing it wrong, make sure you keep your mind on what your doing and do it how you should

Maybe get yourself to a sports physio and get to work on it. Seek out someone good.

I would go back to basics - like when you are learning. When I teach people I always make them jump up on the sand until they can do it 10 times in a row smoothly. Lots easier on land than in the water. Maybe you should practise getting up at home in the lounge whilst watching TV or similar - do it until you are happy and its second nature then do it again and again!

Good luck - coming back from injury is never easy - but you will get there I am sure. Then do it the next night and the next night....

By the way - that website you made Josh is a ripper. Nice work. I shall be contacting you when I need one!!!

Having a long term back injury I understand where your coming from Jas' always protecting it while popping up,but the back is as new thanks to bike riding,Chrispy I hope wont mind me saying this,I've noticed the young chargers injury is still playing on his mind, its a mind this. But having said that I completely understand why.

Give it time mate, you'll sort it out.

Hafta agree here, maybe you could give the step pop up a bash as per how I was first taught, might help with the mind thing. After having quite a few injuries through footy I feel for you mate but you'll come good for sure

Long term lay off means your brain has 'forgotten' how to pop up. It's like they say, if you don't use it you lose it. The good thing is the process is still up there. A couple more sesh's practicing and you'll be alright mate.

Tip though, stretch as much as you can. It'll loosen you up your core muscles and make it easier to 'pop up'.

Have to agree on the sports physio idea. I have improved my flexibility a lot thanks to my sports physio.

Ted, not sure I agree about it being easier to popup on land (if you are not a complete beginner). Don't know why, but I can pop up 40 times in a session on water but 10 times in the lounge has me stuffed.

That's only because you've drank 10 beers before popping the lounge

Might have something to do between how lively you feel in a beautiful, natural environment during a session, compared to part of the "normal working day".

Yep, you'll get there... I broke my back 13yrs ago and was out for 10 months and still sore when I ventured back. Sucky Perth beachies are my home, but I was so worried about getting pitched and hurting my back it stuffed me around for a while. You just gotta ease into it and not over think it... when I had my ankle recon I came back too early and it was giving me the ****s - so I resigned myself to the fact that I needed a longer lay-off and went and did lap swimming for a few weeks. When I went back in my mind I'd done the right thing so I was more confident in the surf.

Good luck - I know it's frustrating as hell...
