OK... becoming very hit and miss on the take off of late.. bit golf and getting the putting yips and it is driving me farkin crazy
Have heard it said "do not grab the rails" during the pop up. This may be the cause of my issue, (or simply I'm crap ..been busy ...lack time on the water).
I know my hands are out at the rail edge and the fingers do curl around.
Why the issue in grabbing the rail
cheers

Two main reasons

1/ surface area, because when you're grabbing the rails, you're really only supporting your weight on the heal pad of your hands.

2/ the action of the water passing over the board is greatest along the rails and there is an increased chance that the turbulence will knock your hands off the rail.

You could probably add a third reason and that is the closer your hands are to your body, the higher your torso will arch.

I agree with obct's un-numbered point 3. Pushing off the deck of the board
(instead of the rails) will get you up faster and higher, and is less likely to create a wobble that may cause you to kook it...

It also lets you get your front foot forward easier - as typically you would put one hand slightly in front of the other (mirroring your natural stance). Again, if you get your feet right on the pop-up and don't have to adjust you are less likely to kook the take-off.

I find when I get rusty the best practice is actually fast breaking waves - as it forces you to get up quickly... you stuff a fair few at first but then it all falls into place.

PS - also be sure that your paddling speed is matching the wave speed...

Good luck...

I had this drama going from short board to longer board I was daunted by the length of the board and scared of nose diving. Put your hands under your chest like a push up and push up just enough to take the weight of body and balance the board with weight distribution on your hands and push up once your balanced. Train this on dry land it will help.

keep your elbows close to your sides when getting up. it keeps a better stronger posture shape in your back.

if you have your elbows out your most likely to have rounded back giving a poor or weak body position to get up fast and strong.

and it is preferable not to be dead gripping the rails. however in rough conditions you have to. then it comes down to timing.

the main thing is don't do the 'chicken wing' when you get up and i think you'll find things a lot easier
