I notice a number of shortboards tend to grab the rails to jump to their feet, but all the surf schools say to use the flat hand push up. Opinions from the greenroom?

I like the flat hand push-up, because if I slip, I feel like I am going to smack my nose on the board.

For no other reason other than I've never really been told otherwise or thought about it I think I push off the rail.

Ive recently tried to push more of the board than the rails. I find i get less spray in my face and it also doesn't slow me any, of it ever did i don't know, but i seems smarter in my mind

Also easier to practise push ups the same as the pop up..

Kadi i tried the push up and leg extension thing on a fit ball(as in your other thread) and its bloody hard

Yeah, me too, bloody tough but good prep.

I have been doing a bit of gym workout for the last month or so, getting strong enough to have a real go soon. Need to lose 20KG then I would be much more agile. Diet starts tomorrow.

I'd never really thought about it till the other day, I just get up as a natural reflex, then my hands slipped and I realised I hadn't put any new wax near the rails.

KS knows what he is doing, throwing decoys to gullible competition

I am still jumping up with the front foot too far back then taking a step. It's not smooth but it works. Not enough exercise and practice so far, but we keep on trying. One day it will feel natural. Cheers for the advice team

I disagree with the rail push up,too much weight either way and your off balance,go the deck push up.

I am a pushed of the flat hands generally speaking but I often grab my rail for late drops on my backhand - especially if its hollow and I want to turn mid face or just drop on a slight angle. I normally grab my outside rail and pull it up as I drop. Allows me to keep my stance fairly low and weight leaning forward. I read an article by Nick Carroll many years ago who said to make late drops you need to think of it like snowboarding....keep your weight centred and over your front foot and the rest of your board will follow. He was dead right. I used to always have my weight over my back foot as I was terrified of the nose dive on late drops....so I would make the drop but end up too upright at the bottom of the wave and in no position to get any drive from my bottom turn and hence would often get left behind...once I started to follow Nick's advice things changed 10 fold for me. Takes a while to get your head around it but it works well for me. On my forehand I never really bother grabbing the rail on any drops - it just doesn't feel right.

Maybe it has something to do with board size too? I tried to paddle a thin 6' board and without all that float, man this thing was not staying with me at all. I kept grabbing it by the rails just to re position the bloody thing.

Mac, I am not really chasing a set weight, but 7 years ago I lost 15 kg's and it was fantastic. I was a bundle of energy. Got to get me some of that again.

Asymmetrical 50/50 for me. Back hand is more on the rail, front hand is more on the deck.
