It has really surprised me that this board remains unsold on eBay....listed for what seems like months now.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/mctavish-redline-10ft-x231-4-x-31-4-malibu-surfboard-/141156127509?pt=AU_Sport_Surfing&hash=item20dd8f9315&_uhb=1

Between 2004 and 2011 I sold many many boards on eBay including Redline's and 66's and I could always get $900 for a name brand board which at the time would be retailing for the $1395 - $1500 mark.

eBay seems to not have the quality it once had, there would ordinarily be 500-600 surfboards generally for sale at any given time (10-11 pages) and more than half would be of some quality.

Can I assume that given it appears to be flooded with cheap imports and items other than surfboards which have been categorised incorrectly to improve views, it's lost it's romance for those of us interested in buying / selling / collecting ?

Thoughts ?....Surf Broker; I'd be interested in your comments given your long term knowledge.

I think 950 is at the top end asking price atm,the Redline looks like its had its day in the mct line up IMO they don't have many or any stock boards.

So much imported rubbish on ebay lately so I agree its lost its way,Guntree seems to be popular with sellers.

Cheap Imports are just that Pup - they are imported and they are cheap - I'm on the ECS band wagon given I had a massive life shift two years ago and the product ****s on many of the 100's of boards I've previously paid top dollar for - is their a problem with stating the fact - not everyone has 3k for a race SUP, 2k for a surf SUP and $1500 for a Log and $900 for a shorty.

I'm talking from experience with the product - a lot comment without the education.

$1250.00 with cover and paddle for the 10'6 and $1750 for the 14' with cover.....off the same line as many 'name' brands.

....and they are night and day to some of the absolute rubbish on eBay.

The cheap importer and or agent has identified and captured their intended target Chris .... I agree that not all folks have the coin to grab what their heart wants - what I will say is that there is at least one brilliant Oz shaper I know that can seriously give that import a cost fight of it's very life .... at least 1 (and he is very very talented)

Geez mate not good news re: house .... that sucks

Personally, I don't think they should have changed the template of the Redline - the bevel tail was perfect IMO and the board lost romance with the change to a Pin.

I had one of Bob's own 9'4 Redline's - grey / blue triple stringer and it really was a stand out.

That's just an opinion - I know nothing of the how's and why's.

they don't seem to pull much secondhand about $400 for a good board.
so what your saving on the cost you've lost on the resale.

i pay about $1700 and get $1100 trade.

You'd always get $800 for the 10'6 and $1000 for the 14'.

I'd say that's a fair loss for the fun.

A longboard at $600 would always sell for $350-$400 depending on condition.

Have a look at the board compared to the one I posted the pic of.....seriously.

.....and that board retailed for 795 at the time so he's lost less than 50% which is a great outcome given the age and use of it.

Ha ha..long term knowledge..hope thats not a reflection on my greying temples SA..my thoughts are much the same as yours, but I think the old GFC might have had a hand in the lower prices for quality "name" boards and the timing was right for the import boards to make an impact on the market with copied shapes at significant lower prices.

Now that the financial signs are improving we might see a rise in price for the quality big name brands....have to agree with you ..you had few boards pass through in that 6-7 years period

Imo,a lot has to do with branding. The bigger player spends a small fortune on branding their products which leads to them being more popular than the lesser known brands, this does not mean the lesser known brands are crap but when it comes to resale value the better branded product will attract a higher price, also if there are two say boards up for sale similar in design and price the well branded product will sell faster.Look at the auto industry buy a Kia v a Toyota van same thing however the purchase price between the two will reflect on the resale price also.

I look on eBay and have bought a board or two off of eBay and never had a problem. I only search used boards as it cuts out a majority of the fluff on the page. As Gumtree in SA rarely has anything that is any good I use eBay. Plus its a good time water.

Me thinks there could be a move away from Ebay due to their current fees, I've bought/sold many through both Gumtree and Ebay , although owned by Ebay Gumtree have no fees.

Gumtree NSW has offered a few quality sticks over the past year and once you have the freight sorted out..all good...only trouble is the payment on freighted items..you take your chance..so far so good for moi !

Thanks Jim,

I totally agree, the fee's on eBay are extreme IMO compared to 'the ol' days'.

I didn't realise Gumtree was owned by eBay - thanks for that info too.

The fees are high but if you live in somewhere like SA where they don't have an abbundance of used surf boards to look at eBay is a great tool and the coverage you get on the product you are listing is Australia wide which means you can get a lot more views on it.

Well aside from the fact it's a McTavish "macca" surfboard (ugh), I think the real reason people are not biting is because of the current economic situation. People with $$$ tend now to go for either really high-end gear (posh cars, clothing, trends, etc) rather than things that are more nostalgic.
I notice the same with vintage audio gear on ebay. A lot of that is now being sold at ridiculous low prices.

Some great points on this thread. I sell lots of stuff on ebay. Big fan. I have also sold lots of stuff on gumtree in recent years and also brought a lot from there. Sometimes when selling you get loads of crap from time wasters and scammers but on the whole I find it very good. In terms of prices - things have really moved down a few pegs across the whole surf range in the last 2 yrs if you ask me. 2 yrs ago you would see a lot of boards selling second hand in good nick for $450 - 500 range - name big brands e.g. CI. But recently things are a lot lower. I had a CI POD to sell in pretty good nick and thought I would get $300-350 for it and was unable to sell it for $200. Its still in the garage - too good a board to sell for that price.

Its really just a classic case of micro economics 101 - supply and demand. If someones wants what you have, it moves quickly if priced fairly, if not it will not move. If you use an auction site like ebay and get two interested parties then its happy days.

One of the main reasons that redline will not probably sell is he has a min bid on it. I find if you start things out at 0.99 you always get lots of early followers and they are often the ones that are there at the end. Also make sure if you are selling stuff that the end time is a good one. I find Sunday evening 7 to 8:30pm the best - which means if I am deciding to sell something on a Tuesday or a Thursday I will just go for a 3 or 5 day auction. I find lots of people who want stuff like the shorter timeframes. Nothing worse than having to wait 7 days to find out if you will own something when you want it now

Asea, the Wegener was advertised for $1595 wasn't it ?

Is a poly Weg worth that much more than a Redline ?

I paid $1200 for my 10' Crusader and $1100 for a Model A which I thought was fair back about 4 or 5 years ago.

They are special boards I know but that's a lot more than $900 for a 2nd hand board.
