"hand tied" leashes are actually very good, and are less prone to snapping, as there is no "weld point".
Make sure it is at least 7.0mm chord. 7.4mm is better, for general Mal use. And 8.0mm chord is only done by a few, and it's pretty chunky, but a requirement for the bigger days in Victoria.
If you are surfing a rocky reef, and if the waves are kind of solid, it is preferable to use a leash which is less than 1 year old. Any leash will eventually fail.
hey simondo,
What the go with a hand tied leash?
been surfin for over 10 yrs and never heard of them?
just googled them and they say they are gettin pretty rare.
cant see any close up pics to see what diff there is
Hey Tomayama,
Hand-tied is actually a "reef knot" or a "sheep shank". Technically a "sheep shank" Chord on one half, lease on the other..... fark it, I'll get a photo.
O&E and Balin still do hand tied.
Hand tied does not look as pretty, but I freakin' guarantee you, they are a whole heap stronger.... this blue leash has had a real solid work over.... nice amount of stretch, and it is hand tied.... leash sling back..... fark that!! Down here, your biggest problem is the old "tomb stone" !!!

)
First pic - ankle leash end, the hand tied part is hidden in a "material pocket" with no swivel.
Second pic - board end, hand tied part is covered in a shrink wrap rubber, with 1 brass swivel.
This style is the original style, before the Bonded / Butt Join.... Newest O&E technology seems to eliminate that bond.....
The Hand Tied Leashes are actually CHEAPER too !! As I said, not as pretty, and not as marketable. 1 swivel is all you need.... Leashes had 1 swivel for ages. I'm guessing no swivels at the start. 2 swivels in the past 10 years or so..... (guessing)....
