An age old topic Mr Ted and one that has puzzled me for a very long time. I am 60 this year and I still don't have the answer nor am I any closer to finding it.
The PUPMEISTERS comments above just about sum it all up, but sometimes when you are just getting ready to travel down that road or put the quiver on the roof and take off, whammo reality hits you fair and square in the face.
Life and work balance is really difficult to attain at a high quality sometimes. Just when you think you have it right something hits you from left field and stuffs it up again.
I don't know the answer, but I do know that you need to give yourself time and space away from things that pressurise you. Be that work, family, partners or just the area you live in.
We are lucky as surfers to have the ocean to fall back on. We all know that no matter how bad your day has been, if you can get wet and maybe catch a wave or two life looks a lot rosier.
Then when you score an epic day and cruise or rip the award is handed to you. Things that were getting you down don't seem so bad and even your mother-in-law seems like a reasonable person.
This is the freward that being a surfer presents every time your enter the water. This might sound like crap to some but I really believe that "Only a Surfer knows the feeling".
So what do we do about it. Take regular holidays that encompass surfing a favourite place or a new destination. Keep in touch with like minded people. Keep your gear ready to use at a moments notice. Make sure your lifestyle revolves around surfing. Create a surf photo gallery in your man cave.
Work to live don't live to work.
Encourage your family to be involved so that you can share the stoke.
Have alternate equipment that can be used regardless of conditions, longboards, md-lengths, 666's etc etc. this gets you in the water no matter what it's like. It also broadens your horizons and gives you flexibility in your style and skills.
But I think that for me the most important thing is to stay focused on what gives me pleasure and to ensure I indulge in that pleasure as often as possible.
Better stop rambling.
Cheers.
