So if you had no Wife/Husband, Kids, Career holding you to your current location, where would you relocate too purely for the waves? (In Australia)

Im only 21, I have no wife or kids and my current job isnt exactly something I see myself doing for the rest of my life. So I have nothing holding me to this waveless joint... I.e. Brisbane

So Im thinking small coastal town, decent uncrowded waves. And well thats my criteria.
The cold water and sharks arent a worry. I just need to get away from the crowds and live a simple life.

Ive always really liked the north coast of nsw, but Im not sure if most places are like Byron and busy as fark... I like how Tasmania seems to be pretty much untouched but its cold. WA could be an option but its on the other side of the country. I think QLD is pretty much out of the race, purely because of crowds.

I have to be realistic about this if I want it to work. So Ill have to save some money before I even think about going anywhere.

Yes Ive posted this in both the short and long forum so I can get a range of opinions. And no I???m not looking for coordinating points to you top secret spot.

Crowds I hear this a lot,I don't understand why some people are put off by crowds,I always get my share and more most of the time.
I'd buy a unit in one of those high rise apartment buildings at Rainbow Bay,its such a nice place.I know I would surf more if I did live there.
I couldn't do Byron or Noosa although I love both places to visit I just couldn't handle the back packers in the surf.

I think my personality plays a big part with my issue with crowds. I just can't deal with crowds anywhere, shopping centres, concerts, sports matches, parties..

Even when I'm kiting I refuse to play in the general areas, purely because of the 5 other kiters :P

Two.choices for me...first I agree with Mac sorta kinda.
First choice would be south coast NSW easily the best waves and still close enough to.be a degenerate on flats spells in Sydney

Second would be vicco....just for waves...

IN saying that I love living on the gold Coast and am not in hurry to leave here ever

Chrispy - South Coast NSW, any areas in particular? I never new there was decent surf down that way. Shows what I know.

Mac - I've only ever been to Byron and Nimbin.. What's the rest of the north coast like? I reckon Byron 40 years ago would of been perfect..

Mate if you take a drive 6 hours south of Brissie you will find that pot of gold in that drive. The whole area is just nice take your pick,I'd love to live in one of those small towns along that drive.

I think that's what I'll have to do Mac. Just pack the van and drive and drive and drive some more.

My only concern with the north coast is that its pretty much in the middle of two major cities. Give it another 20 to 30 years and I wonder how sleepy it will be.

Byron / Wategos but only if some deranged Arabs ethnically cleared the population ...... then anywhere further down from nearby to a certain fountain of goodness near Coffs ..... and that might be sooner than later

I have looked into this question at numerous times throughout my life. For me I think Port Macquarie is the perfect location. Climate is perfect, although Port itself has not the best surfing options, within a short 10 minute drive you have many great uncrowded options. Always uncrowded and a friendly crew. Real estate is a lot less that major cities and most of the infrastructure has been rebuilt thanks to Rob Oakshots's balance of power in the Federal Government. The town is big enough that there is a chance of getting a good job and pursuing a career in something.

I could go on forever about this Region, but I won't bore you. Should check it out sometime. I would be there tomorrow, if it wasn't for the things you listed that aren't holding you back...... Job, kids, schools, my age etc

For uncrowded, great waves, I would live on the NSW south coast, between Pambula and Narooma.
But if, like me, you don't like the cold, NSW mid north coast is the go.

Nice choice...but being a young bloke,I would live anywhere from wombarra to windang..I would go further but hey to go from place to place with a w so many waves and Sydney is just up the road. Everything a young surfing degenerate with partying and ambition could hope forit is ****ing cold though

The South West of WA (Cape to Cape) is magic, I lived in Margs for 4 years in the mid 90's. But its a bit sharky now...also unless you have some particular skillset, your going to be lucky to get some crap low paying job that allows you to scrape by paying for your high cost of living (SW accommodation & necessities like food are very expensive).

Albany...great place, I've spent a lot of time there. But it does get very cold in winter...

As for the rest of WA, you can have great paying jobs in the mining sector & then fly to Indo on your week off. I'd probably recommend that if you don't mind working long hours for a couple of weeks. Just leave your board in Bali & don't acquire material possessions other than a few clothes & a laptop. You could easily put money away for your future.

I do love Northern NSW & could easily live there if all my family were there. But I spent a couple of years on the Great Ocean Rd Vic in the late 90's, almost bought 40 acres over looking the beach at Wild Dog Creek. But I missed my family, came home, met a girl & got married (& heard Apollo Bay had a real estate boom 2000-2001 dammit but missus is pretty cool ).

Otherwise I think working towards acquiring skills that are in demand anywhere in the country. Once you've done that, then you can truly live anywhere you like & do trips overseas, rather than worrying how your gonna scrape up the cash to pay the next bill. Jobs like a trade, chef or nursing.

Mac's Rainbow Apartment idea is a good call actually. If I was loaded, I think I would buy an apartment at Rainbow to view that lineup... As crowded as it can get, you could still find a wave amongst the crowds, pick you bank, or hunt the beachies...

Re: Mick's essay.
I know a bloke who works on an oil rig in Timor Sea and does month on the rig and month in his villa in Bali.
Talk about one extreme to the other.
Must take some transitional adjusting.

Did I just say 'transitional adjusting' ?

Sounds unreal to me!
If I was divorced, I would something similar!
Find myself a nice villa, and nice Balinese girl (not lady-boy!)...
Shaping bay behind the villa.

I think you're thinking of the new McTavish model, the Transitional Adjustor. It's a lot like the Original Adjustor, only they've transitioned the price.

LOL I think Katoey's are more of a problem in Thailand...but yeah, I'd probably go on a search for an Indo lady if I were divorced. Living in WA I know & have met heaps of guys working in the resource industry & splitting time between here & SE Asia. Sometimes I wish I'd traveled over to Indo in the 90's instead of Oz. I used to have a saying that Oz was changing faster than other countries coz I was comparing to stuff I'd seen on the documentary channel & I was really thinking of European tourist traps. Not Indo surf magnets. I'm glad I did see & experience some great Oz places, but yeah think I really farked up not seeing Bali back then. I guess there are places almost as good, maybe even better. I don't know. These days though I'm not into sleeping in the back of my car after a choof, 6 pack of beer & open fire cooked jaffles. I want the private villa & a variety of restaurants within walking distance...Gotta take the good with the bad I guess...

& yeah Chrispy, I think the Bali hospitals are a lot better these days. They did a great job stitching up that guys Balian Shark bite not so long ago.

But I digress maybe & fark my beers empty...

Mick - Thats my biggest worry. I have no qualifications. Ive worked ****ty retail for my first couple of years in the work force. Im also not a fan of the Mining and Oil Sectors. Which is a bummer since it appears to be decent money.

Alright so it seems I have to explore the North and South Coast.

Right now Im in the mindset of living in a ****ty little shack on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Im not a social person as you can probably tell, so night life sits at the bottom of my must have list.
Can you tell Ive been watching Morning of the earth a lot lately :P

Mmmmm Asian chicks. I think Id buy two or three though ;)

Well with your qualifications you can't go wrong. Life and experiences are on the way up now mate...my suggestion for the south coast was based on waves and jobs...I would be stoked to live on the dole down there and Surf all the time...national park around ,do some gardening
Sydney up the road, well you have every ****ty job or promotions at your feet....
But after your last post,I would just join some sex cult in Tassie and surf perfect empty waves....I came close once...was stopped by...well that's another story

@ Superpoop...It should be your biggest worry...If you are some effeminate **** with soft hands not willing to work hard its not gonna happen mate. It'll be a fricken miracle if you find some place out on the fringes with some kinda Morning of the Earth vibe...even Tassie started filling in the gaps years ago. I know 4 guys who have moved there in the last 3 years & the good old cheap houses you could pick up for less than 30k are long gone to peeps with some spare cash looking for summer recluse just after that big underground mining collapse put the place back on the map...seriously mate. If you find some kinda loophole, your my farking hero. But the best advice I can think of giving you is get some pieces of paper saying your qualified for something people need. Otherwise your gonna be chasing nickle & dimes, not the dream of yesteryear(+++++).

@Chrispy haha same here mate on the rockstars statement...well apart from Keith & Ozzie...got some hell survivor DNA those guys

But I think its probably easier to do things in the other order these days...pieces of paper are so important these days, especially when you don't have the personality to make things happen...this guys telling us he's not a people person, seriously need bits of paper to do the talking if thats the case.
