I'm travelling up the East coast (Sydney - Noosa) in late April / May and was hoping some of you locals can shed some light on water temps. Will I need a wettie and if so will a springsuit do the job?

From Sydney north in those months, I reckon you'll get away with it.

I surf all year in Sydney and the most I usually have is a long sleeve spring with a rashy under it.

Even my 3/2 steamer leaks like buggery and it's still not a problem, I think I used it only once last year.

Take a long sleeve rashy or two along.

There is this phenomenon called "ekman transport" where the costal and and the deep ocean currents swap sides, when it happens, the water from Port Maquarie to Jervis Bay gets as cold as a witches tit, I've only ever experienced it once at Xmas about 6 years ago, the water temp was 14 degrees in the middle of Summer, no one went anywhere near the water for a week. But it's an extremely rare occurrence.

I was in a short John and rashie right into June and I live 80km south of Sydney . You'll be right but a 3/2 steamer would be a good thing to have

No steamer required around Sydney until later may early June as general rule. Heading north you will be fine with a 1mm wettie top

Let's fellas in here no your movements as you begin your journey - coast is pretty well covered in the Greenroom and I am sure a few of the boys will hook you up with some waves.

Cheers Ted, I have the wife and kids in tow but reckon I should be able to squeeze a few (dozen) sessions in.

Sorry Mitch my man, but Noosa is going to be closed in May this year.

You might want to change your plans. The local surfers have complained to both the council and the state government that they can't get enough water time.

An arrangement has been reached with all parties to close the gate at the first roundabout in Hastings St. Access will only be granted to people who can produce a current rates notice. The aim is to ensure a continued good level of contentment to local surfers of all types.

There are a few other rules being drafted at the moment but these relate mostly to what crafts are allowed in certain areas.

Oh by the way, if you could surf in May the water temp would be around 20.

I swear that you are becoming physic Mac.

Sitting here being silly , drinking Italian Prosecco and not realising that there may be a negative impact on my Endone consumption.

For those that travel. Just took a quick trip to Eden/Pambula. Glad I took boardshorts a 2ml long sleave hipster. It was still to hot. Water on south coast is incredibly warm this year.

I surfed from Lennox to Noosa at the end of July a few years ago & I was hot in a springsuit at times. Springy will be as much as you would want to wear mate, but you will probably just be in boardies/rashie 99% of the time
