I tried out my new on-board camera today, so here is my footage. Any advice on next steps to improve. This is real beginner stuff. I lost the camera and spent 20 minutes looking for it, then someone else found it and I saw them picking it up. The last minute is just the camera unattended rolling around.

Constructive feedback only please.

sorry mate i did not watch it all. first thing is stop standing there and jumping into the waves. learn to paddle into them from the start. this whitewater learning is bull**** imo. how you get your feet like that on a pop up is a credit to you for actually being able to ride the wave. in saying that, with your feet movement you will be dancing on the board in no time. you move your feet swiftly and get into position with ease once you have popped up. so imo if you get your stance correct on takeoff and paddle into green waves...well you will surf better than me in about a week.

Way to go Kadi, I'm impressed. As Chrispy said, you'll be showing a few fellas up in no time, so long as there is a smile on your face and you get out of the water happy, it's all good.

Good work mate

Thanks jas and dotcom. I am in rehab after a horrific working 20 years in an office chair with bugger all exercise

On the up and up. Today was just going to be a camera test and get out of the house. Might book a lesson after easter, bad weather cancelled my last appointment.

Kadi, from what I learned not so very long ago, you're placing your hands too far back down the board. You may, as I do, find it easier to push up with your hands under your nipples, just as you would do a normal push up in the gym. When you do your pop up, make sure you get your front foot in between your hands and dont lift them until your foot is in place. This has the added advantage of keeping the weight forward. Think about it, when you paddle, you keep your chest down to keep the weight forward, but if you place your hands around your hips, the weight is automatically back down the board, meaning you may slip off the back of the wave.

That's my 2 cents worth, and was what my surf coach drilled in to me to make sure I got more fluid in my paddle to pop up.

Thanks MR, but getting my front foot between my hands is actually my biggest challenge. I struggled with this big time for ages. Long term work-in-progress, but slowly getting better.

Hi kadilak,
This is just my opinion but I think that your biggest problem is that you are popping up to a straight leg position. This stops you from absorbing any bumps or ripples in the surface of the water, or the instability in your board as the wave catches up with you.
Immagine hitting a speed hump in your car with no suspension, real hard to control and a crappy ride. Same thing happens when surfing with strait legs! When you pop up try and stay as low as possible, then as the board moves around you can maintain a smother ride by extending and bending the knees as required to help keep the smooth ride.
It also lowers your center of gravity which makes balancing easier. The first thing you see a tight rope walker doing when he is loosing balance is bend his knees to squat down, do the same.
This will also help you later when you want to turn the board harder by allowing you to straighten your legs to generate drive during the turn.
Hope this helps

Kadi'I really enjoy your stoke mate and your getting better everytime I see a clip of you,if your around I'll give you some advice,I'm no expert but I'll get you going fast champion.

From the clip above,it looks like your too far back on the board when paddling in hence once you pop up your weight is in the back 3rd and your dropping off the wave.

Told you the 9.3 would fast track your surfing well done mate

All good Kadi, what Mac said is good, as well as CrispCritter....and if you can't get your feet between your hands, paddling a little further forward, pushing up with your hands beneath your chest, not your waist and staying low will be a great leap forward. It was for me.

I also watched this a few times. There are about 10 vids and they're full of a lot of detail, but if you re-check everything you've learned so far pretty soon it wil become second nature.

A breeze get together would be great. Plomer was fantastic in Nov last year. Sadly I have no more weekends left before I go OS for three months.....
