Hiya Guys,

My old man is looking to get back into surfing after 20 odd years out of the water.

I told him to get a second hand longboard but he wont have a bar of it.. wants a new one shaped for him. (I am truly my fathers son)

Any recommendations of good longboard shapers along the vic surf coast?

Thanks!

(i did do a quick search but apparently "shaper" is a highly used word in the beer garden)

Seeing as they pretty much only make longboards I figured they knew what was up.

i would only buy a southcoast if you want a log imo. beautiful(very) boards with mind blowing quality,yet i would only have one for my wall.

here is two shapers that were recommended to me,one already from above.
dave boyd and greg brown are guys you dad should look up

sounds like the old man is up for a 'real' challenge.

why waste precious time on a long board- get a 666.

20 years is not a long time to be out of the water if you were a really dedicated surfer.

The basic skill sets seem to stay with you forever, including an ability to read the water and the rips.

His biggest problem my be any bulk he's put on in the past 20 years, that will really hurt his chances.

So if and when you do find the right shaper, you'll need to be very honest with them because it may be better to sacrifice performance for more volume to give him a fighting chance.

imo i do not think they are able to make a good h/p or allround board. logs are very basic in shape and skill required to make.
,beautiful quality wise, they are like a nice shiny RR

My 2 cents worth of additional comments;
This is my take on each shapers specialty / signature board...

Greg Brown at Gash - very good quality higher performance boards

Dave Boyd Imperial Surfboards - don't know Dave's specialty... like all the other shapers listed here, does awesome logs through to High Perform, and nice art tints...

Jordy at HighTide Surfboards - old school, can do knifey rails, tinted artwork and hand-drawing amongst the tints is his specialty... tint work is new-old school

Ian at Southcoast Longboards - Californian Tankers & Nose Riders, and amazing tints, but can easily do you a high performance board... Glass jobs are typically a fraction heavy... but that can also be a positive...

Who's gunna turn a board around the quickest... I would have $5 on SouthCoast / Chizo.

Good luck on deciding on;
- shaper
- board style/type
- board dimensions
- tins & artwork!

Enjoy!

Yeah Dave and Ian will get your order done quickest...Greg and Jordy can be a little difficult to get hold of sometimes.....
