Saw an ugly board today...
But the more I looked at it, the more I wanted to surf it.
Prettier than a Meyerhoffer!

The Ugly Stick was about 7'6, mini mal. Home made. Home Glassing. 1+2 fin set up. A little more rocker than normal. Timber tail block. At least 3 bits of grey duct tape on nose and rails...

Extremely Boxed rails... As in almost zero shaping... Vertical walled rails! ...

Yet strangely, I wanted to ride it... But i have never wanted to ride a Meyerhoffer...

It's remarkable that a board can look so bad yet still work, the one I made was shaped under a single ceiling mounted fluro, it's completely asymmetrical. Just evening up the rails meant that there were discrepancies of up to a 1/4 inch between sides, and the glassing was a disaster.

But the board works so well, I sold 2 other boards because I knew I would never ride them again.

Look at foamys, not too much refinement in their rails, or anything else for that matter, but you still see people managing to rip on them.

Does Rowdy Rod have dice for nuts and a Rubics Cube for a dick?

I'm a great believer in adapting yourself to the board.

For sure you can have a shaper make a board for you and it will perform as you wanted.

But not everyone could or can afford that luxury . Some very good surfers have had to buy off a rack or off a mate.

They then set about adapting to what they have and finding out how it works best.

Ugly yes, useless, probably not.

This is what I call Ugly/Beautiful..

I like old boards and this one needed some fixing..It's a Bob Cooper Stinger..double concave ..swallow tail.

State of the art in about '75..shaped by Ritchie West..it's seen some waves.
