I have a slightly better understanding of Surfboard 'Tyre Kickers' now...

I've never really understood haggling for that last $20 or $30 on a $450 board that you have decided that you want...

But I find myself in a similar position looking at Motorbikes...
I've made a strong offer of $4k on an XR400. He wants $4.5k... But for $4.5 to $5k there are much newer XR's available...

But now I figure I might just stretch the budget to $7k and get a KTM anyway! Newer, faster, lighter!

Mac - yeah, was kind of thinking of moving up to the XR400, but I'm swinging back to KTM now!

Boofy - way too funny!! Glad I didn't get that board... I was only haggling with you because I didn't really need it, and I was just testing the waters!

Ted - I'm tend not to run be the seat of my pants... you only live once! Plus I just received a new "contract", only 30 minutes ago. Life serves up Aces sometimes... So KTM all the way!

Pup - won't go a new one just yet... Don't ride quite enough. You can get a near new KTM with 2,500km for at least $5,000 less than a new one! That's $2 per kilometre! LOST! &

KTM = thousands to maintain...... If you've not had one before, check the service intervals and reliability before you do, as well as the cost of spares. They are fantastic to ride, but having ridden with a few who detonated clutches in the middle of nowhere has made me a bit KTM shy. On the other hand, my ex 1986 XR never, ever let me down.

I think I'll give a KTM a try... I'm still officially tyre kicking though!!

I've now ridden a KTM 450, and a Safari XR650 (neighbor has the XR650). Have not ridden an XR400 for donkeys years, but the XR400 is still an option...

But late model KTM's are getting a really good wrap in terms of nothing going wrong, especially if you don't flog them hard. So a 450EXC with minor restrictions in place will probably serve my needs for 2 or 3 years.

Funny story...

Rode a KTM 450 on Friday evening. Lovely drive into King Lake Bushfire District...
Another guy was also looking at the same time... this young guy rocked up with a trailer attached to his car... So I knew he meant business!

We both had a test ride... He produced $8,600 is cold hard cash, which was the asking price... the buyer looked over to me... your turn to bid Simon... I simply said... I love the bike, and I already got to partial agreement at $8,400, but since you have the cash and trailer, I think you should have the bike.

Plus the bike had 'more than a few' cosmetic scratches. So I could see it had been through "hell and back" for its lowly 2,000km.

I kicked back with the owner and his mate and had 2 lovely beers his in Man Cave Shed!! So it was still a fun evening. Fun little episode associated with my first KTM ride...

PS - the kid buyer wanted to ride with no helmet and in thongs... The owner at least threw "a lid" (helmet) to him. He did ride in thongs... Young kids hey!

Do it mate you will not regret it the XR is good if you want to put a milk crate and kelpie on the back I will try and dig up a coupla pics of my old KTMS I loved everything about them except the left hand kick on the old 620LC4 if you got it wrong it could push your leg back up through your arse The 300 exc was like a BMX bike with a 300cc engine so quick

Boof, the mates XR650 is sweet, but sadly not sweet enough... I will get a photo for you boys though.

So I think KTM is it... 350EXC is probably a touch small for my Dual Sport needs, even though the 350 would tear balls in the tighter stuff... But I like the faster "desert" style tracks. Open terrain speed... I think I need the longer legs that the 450EXC provides...

Basically $8.5k to $9.5k gets you near new... A $13.5k to $14k KTM drops $2k with 300km on the clock... At 1,500km they have dropped about $4k... At 2,000km they are hitting a $5k drop...

Depending on finances... I might still lash out on a 2014 Six Days Sardinia Special Edition...

This is the 2013 German Six Days machine.
