What's the go with turtle rolls. I have now seen instruction videos that say roll off and back on the same side, and others that say roll off one side and back on the other side.

Thoughts?

hahahaha,i just grab the nose pull it down hard,feel the wave go over me then re-surface and scramble back on like a wet dog. i have not seen one person do a complete roll over or i just grab the nose and dive under

Never been a fan of the roll over thing,as above or do a chrispy,grab the nose jump off or big bail knowing nobody is behind you.

twas funny today, walking out, pushed the board over a wave, it lifted, then the strong wind caught it and the board smacked me in the head. Would have been so funny if it happened to someone else :D

The key thing is always hold your board,never let it get away,thats when nasty things can happen.

Just get back on whatever way feels right for you.

I'm not sure that the rol they demonstrateed in that vid is much of a real world appplcation.

It may be okay for a tiny gutless wave in Newquay, but in a decent wave you'd be rooted in no time flat.

For me, the roll is the last resort because they tire you out so quickly. If you're caught in smaller stuff just do a kind of a pushup with a jump of your feet. That pushes the nose under the wave and tunnels the foam through and under you.

Doing the roll and immediately paddling is another sure way to quickly run out of petrol because you're paddling in foam, that means you're essentially paddling in thin air, so you expend a heap of energy and get nowhere.

Just try as hard as you can to stay out of the wave zone.

Even if that means going back into the beach and going back out in the nearest rip.

No expert on the roll,I normally do the rock jump catch the wave into the beach do the run around and repeat for the next 6 hours

You would have to have some dirty big balls to do a rock jump at snapper wouldn't you Mac?

I was reading an old SURFLINE post about the mechanics if snapper and it showed fanning at the jump rock.

I bet a few boards have been broken there, not to mention a few bones.

I'll have a look for the story.

Anyone who has not walked on those rocks should,they are like a razor blade

I can now understand why they are so sharp after reading that story and noting that the point was formed by lava from a volcano 20 mil ago.

It must have been the same type of volcanic rock that formed the woopi headland because those rocks are as sharp as all f###.

I reckon the only time you would do a roll would be ith a big board 9 feet and over. Anyway I thought it was called an Eskimo roll. Never heard of a turtle roll or is that different again.
As for rocking off I had a beauty a year or so back. I was jumping off this rock where the take off spot was only about 10 yards away. I should have held the leggie in because when I jumped onto a surge I didn't realize the leggie had got caught around a big knob of cunje and I was left floundering on the rock as the wave receded. There was a lot of laughing in the lineup.

Seen a mate do something similar years ago Funny as ( because you always gotta laugh at ya mates ) It was even funnier when he finally managed to get up off the rocks minus all his fins I was laughing so much I slipped on the rock next to him and nearly broke my ass bone. Funny as.
