I'm currently driving a Nissan Xtrail 2013 & considering something with next level 4WD ability. Mostly sand.

Was considering a Landy but my boss was a wealth of information when I brought it up this week and has me swaying towards Patrol.
Seems like a Ford vs Holden kinda thing and was a good convo, what do you guys reckon?

Chasing a Landy or Patrol with a budget of about 15k - 25k ????

Petrol vs Deisel?
Some motor over another motor? (boss was talking about hand grenades with some motors lol)

Don't need heaps of seating, just extra space for boards, not excessive fuel costs.
Enough room in the back for someone 6'2 to sleep would be a bonus.
I'm hoping to do a lot more OZ surftrips this year and need a new car.

Would appreciate your thought's. Cheers

Had 3 Patrols ..swb 3.3 afari 4.2 and Ute 4.2 , solid motors but a little under powered with out Turbi , The $.2 is one of the strongest motors ever built ,

Sorry typos above the 4.2/ 6 is the better motor but can have overheating problems due to small cooling capillaries in the motor , good for 800 thousand ks plus if oil changed at every 5000k .
the 3 litre motors were known to grenade and avoided in earlier models , and a little under powered , Patrols have strong running gear but there were problems with 5th gear flogging out when towing in 5th .
The 4.2 turbos are the best but hold there value , you can buy a 3 litre model and convert to 4.2 as others have .

Cruiser hands down, the best patrols were the 4.2 the 3 litre common rail turbos are a ticking time bomb. Can't go wrong with the GXL V8 cruiser pricier but well worth it.

Don't really know much about 4WD's but if it was me I would go the Toyota, at that price range youll be looking at some of the older ones that are bullet proof.

Leaning more to the landy now. Got my eye on a couple of old troop carriers but I'll probably watch what comes n goes over the next few months to get an idea of bang for buck.

Don't know anything about Nissans, but we run Toyota landcruisers as our survey vehicles.
Can't speak highly enough of them.
We have a fleet of 30 plus, some of which are 18 years / 600,000 km and still going strong.
Moved away from troopys when they became more expensive than a 200 series.
Turbo 4.2 diesel is bulletproof.
Older non turbo ones are too, but are fairly slow up hills.
Don't think you could go wrong with one as long as it has been serviced.
Avoid ex govt. and ex construction company diesels that will have been left idling all day.

On Nozzas last point, a friend of mine mentioned that prados and Landies such as you're looking for can be found over east at much reduced 2nd hand price relative to WA. Do some research for an east coaster (prob stick nsw or vic) away from mining areas and heavy coastal use and you might get a bargain with mostly highway kms that you could buy unsighted if the owner sounds ok over phone.

pretty reasonable for it to get put on a truck and shipped over for you to still be miles ahead. My 2 cents
