Hey all

Currently riding surf sups have done for the last couple years. So wave experience isnt so much an issue. More so the getting up while the wave is green.

I have never really tried to prone surf but its something id like to tick of the list of skills and have a board when supping isn't going to happen.

I'm 6 foot and 95kg. Not
really sure where to start on a board size? I'm on the sunshine coast qld. So mostly 2 - 4 foot swell.

In my surf sups I like racing sections and my bottom and top turns. So a board that is a bit loose and carvy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Good to see you left the Dark side but remember young nugdam the force is strong
id probably start with duct taping your arms I guess they're going to do some weird things.
all jokes aside I started prone and the transition to sup was strange but you'll find your way.
i even find it strange when I've spent to much time on 666s then back to a performance board.
sadly my prone days are coming to a holt with my back problems.
so go get into it,Only thing you need to add what style are you looking for ,walking board, nose riding ,performance .
best person I would speak to is your local shaper or try some mates or buy some knockabouts.

I would just like something cruisy but has the ability to carve when need be! Probably one of those unicorn boards . Was lookinh at the 8 foot devocean from the surfboard warehouse.

I see a few dudes ripping on the waves on longer boards. I will have to ask them next time what they ride... if they'd talk to someone on a sup

i know they're a different price point to the SW boards, but being on the Sunny Coast, i'd pop into Noosa Longboards and hire one of their boards - or a few of their boards (pretty sure they still do hires). if nothing else, you can get an idea of what size/shape suits you best before going elsewhere. Golden Breed in Noosa also seems to have a variety of different boards for hire too.
Grab one, take it out, bring it back, grab a different one, repeat.

At your size (and i'm bigger), you may find 8ft too small - but won't know until you try.

Cheers mate.

I'll have to make a trip up that way soon. I'm down caloundra.

What literage board would you be thinking is a good starting point? The SW boards are around 59L. Going to see beachbeat today to see what they recommend.

I'm your size and have the 7'6" Devocean. It's. Great board for the Sunshine Coast - I live in WA but visits Queensland regularly and that's the one I chose to purchase and leave in Qld as an all rounder.

Depending in the style of surfing you want to do I think the 8' would be fine. You'll still be able chuck it around - the 7'6" is a burster - yet it will provide ample stability to get up. You can already surf so the rest is just refinement, practice and fitness.

if you want longboard cruising, go way longer. I jump from 8'' to 9'4" or 9'6".

I've had three SW boards and they have all gone really well. A 6'10" off them is one of the most versatile boards I own.

Sooooo many factors and i don't know if volume is really what to look for to begin with.
This was my experience: i learnt to surf at 40 (and still the consummate beginner), and weighed in at around 100 kg at the time.
i walked into Sideways to buy my first board, not really knowing any better. The biggest board they had in stock was a 9'0" and the gent in store assured me that it was more than enough to learn on. it wasn't. Not even close.
Big difference between you and i would be fitness levels and skill. Given your SUPing, you'd be much fitter than i was and more experienced in the surf.

i wish i had have rented some boards before jumping into buying one off the rack. i can surf the 9'0" that i have, but i still feel it's undersized for me... but you having SUP experience could/would change the ball game altogether.

If your going to be surfing Moffats you want a proper longboard 9foot plus, like between 9'4 & 10. Once you get past the pop up it will feel like it has heaps of performance compared to a SUP. Going from my 8'10 sup to one of my longboards is like going from my longboard to a shortboard in performance increase. Then once your feeling comfy on the 9 foot plus board, add a shorter board to the quiver like around 7 foot or a bit bigger so you can duckdive it in bigger swells & surf Kings & out on the banks in front of the river. You really want length for Moffats though & it will be a heaps easier transition in the long run.

You got heaps of second hand options over there, just go for a known brand board with 2 + 1 fin setup. Check out gumtree.

Cool, thanks for the input mate. Am going to go look at the boards tomorrow from them. Interested in the 8 foot devocean as you know and the 8 foot mahi mahi minimal.

Something I can throw around will tick the boxes for me.

I went out this morning in head high slop at moffat beach. Got a few fun waves but hard to get in the good zone with so many proners... cant beat em join em haha.

Modern Old School, a wave catching machine. Not much beats the glide of this board. Its a single fin & doesn't have great performance. But worth considering for its getting in early to reduce takeoff difficulty & its 24 inch width makes it super stable. I regret selling mine & my mate wont sell it back lol

These ones would be worth a glance too if you are heading to the Warehouse.

Mmmm - Moffatts. I like that wave. That's my go-to over there.

Fun wave, only surfed it a few times on double head plus. But even then everyone was on longboards (July 2009).

Ended up putting some money on a 9 foot soultice.. looks like a good longboard shape not overly expensive so at least I can learn on it and go from there. The 8 foot devocean looked pretty small to what I'm used to!

Im sure anything should rip compared to a 30 inch wide sup!

Glass is probably a bit light, but that will reduce swing weight for you to throw it around a bit more. Just havta take good care of it, but for that price its fairly disposable anyway. Let us know how it goes for ya

Are you saying its a fragile construction?

I'd say something like 6 bottom, 10 top PU. Probably not fragile, but not strong either. Personally I wouldn't want a heavily glassed performance LB anyway, a log yeah, but not a performance board.

From the website - Deck: 6oz + Bamboo (inlay) + 6oz / 4oz re-enforced rail / Bottom: 6 + 6oz

Should be built like a tank. That said, i bought a used Surfboard Warehouse/AQSS board - one of the Beau Young models. Similar glassing schedule, sans the bamboo. The deck is crushed pretty good on that one, so perhaps the blanks aren't the best?

You know what i just realised? They abbreviate Aquatic Social Scene to AQSS...didn't make sense why the Q is part of the abbreviation, until i figured it out....

Been having a bit of fun on the 9 foot soulstice. I can pop up nearly everytime ride along a clean face.

My main struggle is wave count. I can paddle my heart out and miss waves I feel like I get no where. Yet I see others paddle and glide onto them! Obviously paddle experience is the key there but dam its annoying haha!

Just curious if people think the soulstice is slightly too small for my size? Boards 9x22 64L I'm 185cm 95ish kg.

Nah not too small for your size, like you said you've been getting waves on it. But if your gonna be surfing somewhere like Moffats, more length is gonna be handy. Keep the shorter board for bigger days or steeper waves & try a 10 footer. Check out gumtree. Mac posted a gumtree advert of one of his old (new) boards the other day. Something like that would aid getting in early. Just remember its more about surface area than volume when it comes to glide provided the board does not have a rocker negating that glide (pushing water).

But yeah the soulstice isn't too small, but it aint big either.

I little more volume would help and don't forget the importance of the rocker.
