Wrong SB, all surfers knew of the places named. Word got around quickly amongst those keen to travel and surf new places.
Yes there were no crowds like today, there was still some Agro, I personally have been punched in the face numerous times by older guys trying to assert their authority when I was young.
The great part was that the surf was generally uncrowded. I grew up around Cronulla which could be crowded even in the 70's, but if you travelled you could get great waves without too many people around. The near and far southn coast of NSW were wonderfull, places to explore and many a great weekend was had.
I think the biggest difference is that population has grown, companies create images to sell their products and people jump on the bandwagon. IMHO the percentage of "real" surfers out there is small compared to what is in the line up.
Got tons of stories from over the years.
Have a good one.
