Had a young fella to give me bit of lip for riding my old mal, telling me I should go back to the 70's, just in fun mind you, and got me thinking..... My old man told me how good the Gold Coast was back in the 70's & the whole reason he moved to noosa was due to waves & lack of crowd back then. I'am 30 & remember how good the sunny coast was growing not that long ago ( lived in wa since 98) & every time I go back I can't wait to get back west....!!!!! Guess where i'am going with this is, they say west Australia is 10 years behind the rest of oz, what do west Aussies think bout this? Also was the past that good maybe from crew that were there? According to the old boy, longer offshores, 20cent beers, less complicated women, 15cent fuel, just a simpler life

Righteous Porn overfloweth ..... mullets & fools did not dare invade the points ... shortboarders were used for wax .... Sandman Panel Horses were the go ..... ahhhhhhh the good old days

I survived the night .... hung 3 cloves of Garlic , a beat up old McTavish mal , a retro-classic 1500cm x 1800cm poster of Captain Goodvibes the Cosmic Pig smoking the biggest , fattest , badarsed joint ya ever seen in your rotten meaningless fetid life & a pair of soiled jocks in the window ... warded off all the evil anti-cull Church mongering skypilots ...... evil bastards they are , meaner than flying skin eating cockroaches

I think Pup has just given you the image of what happened to people who lived through the 70's surf scene , although his description was of the "nice" people.

Truth is surf scene was just as agro but far less crowded, dope was plentiful but not enhanced by chemicals, piss was cheap as was petrol and you could ditch your job and find another easily if the boss didn't give you the ok for that surf surfari north.

You know what, no one knew of Noosa/Yamba/Angourie/Cresent until the "mouths" came back from their trip tell all and sun dry what great places they had found..

Wrong SB, all surfers knew of the places named. Word got around quickly amongst those keen to travel and surf new places.

Yes there were no crowds like today, there was still some Agro, I personally have been punched in the face numerous times by older guys trying to assert their authority when I was young.

The great part was that the surf was generally uncrowded. I grew up around Cronulla which could be crowded even in the 70's, but if you travelled you could get great waves without too many people around. The near and far southn coast of NSW were wonderfull, places to explore and many a great weekend was had.

I think the biggest difference is that population has grown, companies create images to sell their products and people jump on the bandwagon. IMHO the percentage of "real" surfers out there is small compared to what is in the line up.

Got tons of stories from over the years.

Have a good one.

You should of said to him .....it was the 60's not the 70's yu dumb carnt. Same as ET and surf broker saw plenty of heavy sizz in the line up at metro beachies in the 70's. But you could find uncrowned spots up and down the coast and I think true surfers love that feeling of finding a spot uncrowned and even better sharing it with friends
