Just had a quick browse on the McTavish site and came across a new midlength model called the Sumo. They dont seem to sit still at that factory with all those new models coming out all the time.

2 company directors, and Bob is now merely "Brand Founder"?
I would have thought the company meetings could be pretty short, but orientated around, let's grow, new models, constant improvement and refinement....

The Sumo is actually not radically different from;
- 8Ball & Origin8
- Egg - stretched egg
- Rincon '68 - the almost famous "Dream Machine"
- and my 7 foot+ shooters that Doug Rogers shapes for me.

Pretty similar planshape I guess. The Takayama Scorpion is another similar looking board. I like that pulled in tail on the Sumo. Does Doug Rogers have his own set up now ? I'm pretty sure he was working at South Coast longboards for a while.

Doug has had his own set-up since 1970, according to his logo !

I've only got to know Doug over the past few years, and he has been shaping in his own shaping shed at the top of Bells Blvd over that time. He does customs, and also "speculative" boards for people like Quiksilver, Zak's in Melbourne, Speaky's in Geelong.... He does "Co-Branding" for those guys.... His "DR" logo on the bottom, and their logo's on the deck. I think the "Golden Dawn - Bells Beach" boards are mainly his own customs.

New Model - The Sumo

The Egg has been a popular McTavish staple for over a decade now, but we often get asked for a high-volume board that will still handle mid size 3-6ft beachies and point breaks. The wider tail on the Egg makes it a bit skatey on the bigger days so its kind of restricted to smaller surf. Enter the Sumo - all the volume you need, and none of the tail width you don't!! Tail widths are around the 14" mark, which really makes this model fly off the tail, and your rail-to-rail transition is easy and flowing. The nose width and high aspect rails keep plenty of volume forward under your chest, so paddling is a breeze. The board retains the same reliable 2+1 fin set-up as seen in the Egg, and comes with a 6" centre fin and GX side fins. We'll be making these from 6'2" up to about 8'0", and the first 3 are available from stock now - check them out here.

Description
The all-new Sumo model is a high-volume mid-length with speed to burn. The wide point is way forward, and the tail is pulled into a tight pin, around the 14" mark. With all the volume under your chest the board is easy to paddle, and once you're up and riding that narrow tail really comes into play. The board comes with a 2+1 fin set-up, but can also be ridden as a single fin if preferred.

I reckon a quad option on it would be OK on it as well.

Emailed Ben Wallace about the Sumo. He says flattish rocker, 60 / 40 rails with a tucked edge in the back with a subtle single into a double concave and plenty of width.
Sounds like it would be a good midlength for a longboard surfer. A good paddler thats nice and stable.
An 8 footer would be good.
I think Mac should get one and report back on it.

Oh the pressure

Come on Simon you've got room for just one more surely, its only small.[}:)]

I had an eightball 8.2 when they first came out a few years ago it was a fun little board at the time.

Hmm mid length boards hey

Could be a way of meeting doggie halfway

Pretty sure I spotted one of these bad boys in Torquay the other week...I thought it was an egg until I got close..it has a graphic very similar to the old Hot Tuna logo on the bottom.....look for a fat bald drop in artist he's the owner...he's happy to show you up close when he bails it right in front of you after dropping in............
