Many times the Greenroom has discussions over shapers and brands but after making a few boards now I am convinced that the glassers are the unsung heroes of board production. Today I ogled over the finish of a Tracker - its was absolutely incredible. We put that board next to a GSI for comparison - and seriously there was no contest. The skill involved in making a board look that good was bloody incredible. Hats off. Perfect it was. Every part of it. Although I am sure the person who glassed it could find imperfections. You could not even see the rolled over into the bottom - completely hidden yet the board had a nice blue tint on the bottom. That one Mac posted the other day was insane as well. I would go so far as to say that it was the nicest board finish I have ever laid my eyes and hands on. Was almost too scared to touch the thing and leaving a finger mark. Got me very excited. The lady of many colours is a talent. Some of those old TF boards from the old days still look unbelievable after all of these years.

Who is the best glasser these days? No fighting

no - not a fisherman - I stay away from those sorts of threads - incase you had not noticed. They drive me round the bend. I come to the breeze for good times only.

I semi agree...I think the sanders make the difference between a good board and a great board....but that will.come after i sleep...

Ok quickly,I have met the glasses of DHD,bourton, super and some other biggies.....the lady of many colours smashes them all...kaz who I love and does the big boys on the scene, just lacks the creative side, not the professional part or quality...he is a sb pro compared to Teena who does that and more.....

I'm lacking of a name atm,but I'm sure someone will point it out, is the mctavish laminator, bill I think it is? Plus I have seen tollhurst boards that are crazy nice. Hervey boards are always delicious as are the taks and co...... And after watching Teena, yep my biased for a girl and skill.will.show,she rocks. Vanders vid summed it up........

But for how a board will.end up.....I will stick buy the sanders

Where's this 'vanders glassing vid' of which you speak?

I hope this 'lady of many colors' rocks, I've given pretty free licence to tasmaniafy my new addition, with one hopefully cool direction...

for me neat is nice enough. sanders are nor credited enough. get the mixes right for a good strong clean light glass job rather then a wall hanging beauty is more of my go.

Yes I agree - have you seen any Josh Dowlings in the flesh? Those things are incredible. Still look very good 3 or 4 years later. One of the blokes on the breeze has a few of them. Lucky man. I guess I was mainly thinking of the plain vanilla type boards when I posted this. How remiss of me

Andyroo - feast yr eyes on this

On josh dowling that bloke is a freak...I have seen a few of his boards up here and I damn near cream every time I have seen then......I mock people who buy firewire boards after seeing this genius....even makes his mates sunova boards look poxy

the ladyofmany colours does a wicked wicked job, her colour combos are amazing. But , in regards to perfection and craftsmenship im sorry but there is no comparrison to someone like Billy from McT. I have seen lady of many colours boards up close and the cut lap lines dont come close, furthermore other glasses say " people who do random splotch type colour jobs do them to hide the fact they cant execute cutlaps well" and i agree, Jake from thomas surfboars jokes about the fact he cant do cutlaps hence the splotch jobs on thomas boards also

There are alot of glassers that do good jobs, but billys expererience is what sets him apart, i have watched him glass 1000's of boards and the techniques and tricks of the trade is what sets him apart, and thats only from 50 yrs experience. I dont doubt that glasses like thelady will get there one day, but at the moment, billy wins worldwide hands down

my second choice would be Tyler Hatzikian

and to add to this, billy will glass boards and put patches, put extra glass in places due to his knowledge of what works and what you will need (aka if ur a heady bloke where to put extra glass) i have seen him also refuse to put tail patches etc on boards because its not right and wont properly compliment the board. i respect that in my books

No arguments from me....the man has been doing it longer and better than I have been blowing candles out on birthday cakes. I will.stick with my biased view though

AndyrooMac, it's not what it seems sometimes.....it's just when a certain fervent supporter goes beyond ones knowledge and limits I like to mock....I'm never angry.....more a big stick to a bees hive...

Wow I just had a thought, imagine if bill got to glass a truly great longboard/shortboard at clearwater surfboards.....the best glassers with the best shaper with the next big thing in glassing under one roof.

WOW

For those in Vicco, Pete Coffey is the man. He was an early glasser at Klemm-Bell and currently weaves his magic at Island Surfboards.

He did an awesome job on both my wife's board and my own including some awesome work with fabric inlays (including fabric on the centre fin).

You'll have to look at my previous posts because I can't get the photos to upload on my mobile.

The man is an artist!

My board was supposed to be green & 2 3/4 thick. Thats one of the reasons it came to be in my hands

I recall people often talking about a guy called Chris Crozier as probably be best glasser of his day, apparently he really push the limits. Shaped and glassed everything but he was most well know for his kneeboards.

Worked out of a factory in DeeWhy from the early 70s to the mid 80s, then he was killed in some bike or car accident.

Any cripples in the membership would probably know his work quite well, I think a lot of his boards had transparent flex tails.

Yeah T, milchy and stranger both make a decent stick, rubbish longboards tho. They kinda just look like really long short boards.

Points have been great early season, lots of sneaky waist high peelers and Carlton River been good to I hear, need to hit it more but its been invaded by sups who sit way out back and snake basically all the waves. Banks at cliffo are apparently good so time to hit it with the bobsled. Where you based mate?

Can't say I have ever seen Brendan shape a longboard! Might have to ask him about it next time I visit him.

I had one weekend down there, the friday was good then that was it. Surfed seven mile and mays.

Clifton? Good banks? What? Pardon? Is that even possible?

Haha, east coast mate. Beaumaris. Been pumping every weekend here.. Shellys has been 3-5 foot every weekend and pumping lefts. Got to love south swells!

Cheers

Nice one! I lived in st helens for 2 years, loved it... Shelley is super consistent but used to probably surf 4 Mile or down to Swansea on those south swells. My best surf ever was off Swansea Golf Course, was over head + half, glassy with 2 others out. You could grab em from the outside reef and jump off nearly at the Jetty. just these big perfect carvable walls, kinda looked like Jbay, was soo sick... even got a stand up barrel on the LB... Was faaaarking so cold though, surfed till I couldn't lift my arms and i couldn't take my wettie off because my hands were cramped into claws, had to get in the car and blast the heater for like 30 mins, then got a massive cold and a week in bed... sooooooo worth it though, i'll never forget that session

BTW, glad you hit Mays/7 mile and didn't crowd up Laudy, hope you scored a few rippers

Haha Lauderdale was last years surf.

Have a mate that lives right on the beach in Lauderdale actually, two for that matter!

Never surfed Swansea, always surfed kullaroo or Swanport instead. Orford is the one we mostly surf to be honest.

But if Shelly's is on then that's up. Seeing as myself, brother and Dad are usually the first out we renamed it Kelly point

Haven't surfed four mile much as of late, Falmouth has been good though. Had one day surfing from the cove to the beach. 400m rides I reckon and only 4 of us
