Apolagies if Im bringing up a subject already discussed but how are the Thai made McTavish boards any different. Have heard opinions that are not as good as Aussie made?

I have a Thai made F/B, was wondering what is so different? Different foam, glassing, what makes them different or is it all here say?

hi s/wester,i brought it up last time after being dissappointed after seeing the made in thailand sticker, however i have been told that the only diff is the glassing is 6 on the bottom and a 6 and 4 onthe deck .so the boards at byron must be 6 and 6 onthe deck.i could be totally wrong but thats what i was told.asea

The materials will be the "same" but they'll just be from a different manufacturer.

Pretty sure that Global Surf Industries make the McTavish boards - they make boards for a couple shapers and ship them world wide.

I'd say the difference would be that the Thai boards wouldnt' have any changes through the season/year/years as they're made from a "master blank". Where a custom board ordered from Byron can have subtle differences depending on the rider.

Global Surf Industries make the Mctavishs that are stamped GSI Made in Thailand. They come in a limited number of dimensions and colours and are approx" $150 to $200 cheaper than a real Mctavish made in Byron Bay. McTs made in Byron use the best blanks/glass/fins available and are machine shaped by Ben McTavish onsite and hand glassed/painted and finned by the best in the business. If a Mctavish board is made in Thailand it is written on the bottom and has a blue stamp with Global Surf Industries on it also. Surftech also make a small range of Mctavish boards in Tuflite which are obviously also made at cobra international in Thailand as are all tuflites. Hand made Mctavish boards are the ultimate in quality and no expense is spared in there production.

NO - I DO NOT WORK FOR McTAVISH ! I USED TO BUT NOW HAVE NO ALLEGIANCE TO THE COMPANY AT ALL.

Spot on billboard, mine has a blue stamp between the fins. I creased the board from rail to rail a while ago and wondered if anyone else has had any problems with the thai models. All fixed up a while ago and no problems since.

I actually love the way the fireball I have now surfs, do I have to get a custom to get it made in Byron Bay or can I just hunt for a Byron Bay made board? Will be a while til I am in the market for a new one but nice to know that the Oz made ones are tougher.

McTavish in Byron make boards for stock in the Byron showroom - you can order premade boards right from their website but there premade so you only pick from what they have listed. The price for the boards on-line are the same (I think) than if you order a custom one.

This isn't the SUP forum - acurate information isn't hampered by "brand pimping" labeling

Sorry mate but they are a bit precious over there and I just wanted to cover my bottom. I have ceased giving accurate info over there because I get hammered for pimping and told I don't know what I'm talking about - now I just don't bother cos everyone knows better than me anyway

Yeah I need to laminate up a chunk of glass/carbon to make a fin out of in the next couple weeks - some reason a couple seem to think a Dolphin fin is fast on racing SUP's.
