Just found this on the FireWire site. It's a pity as I am a fan of both.


Firewire has ended our exclusive sponsorship of Taj as he has decided to experiment with both FW and PU surfboards. At his specific request, Firewire will continue to build Taj cutting edge equipment and we are obviously stoked on everything we accomplished together over the past 5 years. There is no doubt that during that period it is commonly acknowledged that Taj did some of his best surfing ever and certainly posted his best contest results in years, winning a number of WCT events including the Quiksilver Pro, the Billabong J-bay event and the Pipe Masters.

As always, we'll remain glued to the CT webcasts and we hope that Taj claims that ultimate prize that has eluded him to date. We're also confident that Firewire surfboards will remain an integral part of his equipment choices as he pursues that quest.

HAHA Taj surfing has gone up since parting with FW and most of last year his boards were painted up to look like FW.

IMO Taj went backwards on FW

Obviously Taj feels he needs to look further for boards but I thought the painted "non-Firewire" boards had been done before with even Taj can firming it wasn't true.

And he never rode FW in Hawaii in the bigger stuff......I still proudly own one irrespective of the great man. I can not see Taj having to ride a sweet potato ever!

Surfing is so subjective eh? I watched his heat and thougt he looked like his boards were dragging.

It can play on people's minds to not be on the exact same equipment. Kelly has the confidence to look for an advantage and believe in it.

The rest of the guys are so close that the micro difference even if an advantage can play on their minds.

It will be interesting to see how his season progresses when he snaps all of his boards, I'll tip he goes back onto FireWire.

speaking of the quicky pro, i just watched r1 highlights.

far out it looks like they are free surfing with stuff their coming up with.

what used to be hi risk is now almost looks so so now.

i'm glad i'm on a sup now so i don't look so below average

So if this is true, what boards is he riding now? I cant find that article on the wesite either.

Kelly by the way is riding concave decked EPS/Epoxies.

Taj Looked like he was riding a Biolis, PU/Epoxy. From what I understand he will still be riding Firewire part of the time. He was probably one of the last surfers still on a large salary from a surfboard company. The salaries do not exist anymore.


I was speaking to a good friend this morning who mentioned to me unprompted that he thought Taj looked flat on his Biolis. He beat Dane and they were both surfing unreal but Taj just didnt look electric.
