I'm putting a tail pad on hp Mal to help me get my back foot further back, where would it be placed?... I'm thinking the pad wedge in line with back of base of centre fin?

If you are already riding that board I would spend a good part of your next session or two focussing on where that back foot goes and how the board responds. Jump up and have a look exactly where it is and get a feel for it. Next wave move it a few inches etc. And back and forth. Try and find that sweet spot. Some boards they are big and others small. I imagine with yr longboard you will have more room for error. Once you get it sorted stick your pad there. I like to put my pad just a fraction behind the sweet spot so when I get up I just whack my foot straight into the raised part and that gives me my exact position to start with. I do tend to shift my back foot around even on my shortly so you want to make sure that you do not get the pad too far forward.

I don't like tail pads. If you are up and your board feels tight, move back. Longboard, shortboard or weird board it doesn't matter. If you are on the tail and the board still feels stiff, play with the fin type or placement.

I don't like how they look or how they feel underfoot. Just learn to move your foot back. It's a longboard - you should probably be moving about anyway.

^^^ Yeah I agree. I think for a shortboard a grips fine because your feet are mostly planted but on a longboard you tend to move around . Cant really see the value in it.

Had one for about a year on the allrounder, only put it there because I kept rubbing away the wax with my big toe.i got rid of it and learnt to paddle differently because while I used it, the turns never felt the same.

the nose didn't seem to whip around quite as quickly.

Thanks for the advice guys, i may hang off for a while n see how i go. I seem to get too far forward with all my boards as i stand up and just thought something to feel as a reference may help me to get back a little...

Hey Loz, I'm with you. I like a tail pad on a longer HP board. I too tend to surf a little forward and I liked having a tailpad on the HP 9'1 i recently sold. I would often be a little forward as i went through the sections of a wave then when I flew out onto the fat wall of the wave I found it really useful to be able to feel with my foot whether I was back enough. I often thought I was, but i wasn't, so i'd put the foot back further, feel the pad, feel confident and wah-hey. It worked for me. I wouldn't go one on a gorgeous old school log, but on the HP? Hell yes, if you wanna.

I was not endorsing a tail pad on the LB just how I would go about placing one ! Tough crowd

I only use tail pads on my smallest board these days. The step-up and semi-gun are pure wax jobs (love the racing stripe ) as is the 10 footer - which is on route as we speak to the new home

World champ Harley Ingleby has been known to use them.

World champ Chelsea Williams, too. Think she rides for Classic Malibu these days...

Chelsea Williams is the current world champion.....

I had one on my hp,it came off....I'm not bothered. I found on a board that big I tended not feel it anyway. I was too busy concentrating on stopping my arms flailing about
