Lets see how long it takes for this one to get off topic

With the current fad in "boot camps" and the general push for people to exercise more etc... I wonder if people are allowed to start later in the mornings due to there exercise routines?

If so I bet my bottom dollar that they would look on starting later in the day more favourably if you were at a "boot camp" session then if your local was gonna be head high and glassy for the morning.

Do employers still see surfing as a way to slack off and mess around as opposed to genuine exercise? I sure know that If I have had an hour or two in the briny in the morning, whether the surf was good or not I am a lot more inclined to put more effort in at work and am a lot more cheerful. The post surf stoke generally gets me til about 1pm! Throw in the fact that it may be a Friday and you go to the pub for a steak sanga and a beer with the boys and not much can wreck your day.

Has anyone out there got the balance between work and surf where it is totally sweet with the boss man? I occasionally score a late morning start for a wave but its always in the back of my mind what the big wigs think of it? Any bosses out there who understand that letting a surfer surf is actually beneficial to productivity

Nope - I think the problem is "only a surfer knows the feeling"...

They all talk about improved 'work/life balance' and being an employer of choice - but I know what the answer would be if I asked to start at 10:00am 3 days a week...

For me, the integration of play/exercise into the regime of work is nothing more than an extension of work.

I don't know anyone at my work who surfs, and that's the way I'd like it to stay.

When I'm bobbing around out the back the last thing I want on my mind is anything to do with work.

Those days are long gone, when you could arrive late or click off early for a wave, much the same as the boss playing his midweek game of golf or long Friday lunch.

We all work longer and harder now days and as a business owner,I can never escape work even in the line up,thinking of the calls I've missed as I return to the car on my days off.

At my age the days are long gone of setting the alarm clock for a wave before work.I will make allowances for my seabreeze mates who want to go the midweek wave but that rarely happens, such a great bunch of guys.

Well boot camp wound kill me and I am happy to see my kids do the early session in the park by the ocean, which would be a good way to start the day!

I used to start work at 9.30 every day. It never went down too well. And every once in a while I would stroll in at 10:30, 11:30, and 12:30, if it was seriously pumping....

Scenario 1 - Winter swell at Fairy Bower Manly. I'm in Nth Av carpark, it's 7:00am and conditions look smoking hot. Go home, coffee, a bite to eat, get board, wettie, and work clothes sorted. Leave at 7:45. Arrive Bower at 8:30. Long mission into line up. 2.5hr surf. Back at car at 11:30+. Get changed, drive to chatty, park car, walk to office.... Hey presto, 12:30 !!

Yeah, those late starts were stalling my progression up the tree... So I quit that job... Now I contract back to them, work from home, earn 50-75% more, and work about 30-50% less, and surf about twice as much.... in quality waves on the Vicco Surf Coast Points.

Isn't it funny how things work out sometimes !!

That sounds pretty good Simondo. Im on the precipice of a decision to get a higher paying job with more perks but doing a hell of a lot more hours, more stress and....less surfing. Not sure which way to go, getting a mid week wave in is pure bliss. I could get a job that pays well enough to do ok and get waves hmmmmm decisions

Did the same 2 years ago, I had just got into surfing, went to a salary job in the same company and doubled my hourly rate Now I'm working at least 60 hours a week and earning less per hour than before. Decided to cut back the hours (and the pay) and have a life again. There's always some give and take ...just depends on who is doing the giving and who is doing the taking

yeah - I know exactly where you're at Souwester... I took the promo a few years back - added another 10+ hrs to my work week, a tonne of stress, but picked up a few V.Good perks... previously I was working mild shift work (7am - 3:30pm or 1pm - 9:30pm Tues - Sat) and was able to surf at least 2-3 times mid week and as a result was the fittest I've ever been... Now I'm stuck with weekend surf (and a few more inches around the middle), and rarely get a uncrowded wave

Hey Guys I will fill you in on my last 6 years
Moved from Sydney to Murwillumbah and bought 100 year old queenslander on a double block doing the permaculture thing.( didnt surf in Sydney we drove to central coast or spent our weekend at Stockton with all the baby Great Whites).
I left a $90000 job with Syd Water and worked for Tweed council for 5 years at $35000pa
I am 1 year into a Bachelor of Nursing at Uni age 43 and work part time in an aged care facility for 16.50 an hour ( where I met Mac ) and can take my pick from any break from Snapper to Byron midweek half an hour away.
My wife has a little bookeeping business going 25 hours a week and life is sweet.
I would pick a summer night at Hastings point with a kilo of prawns bread rolls the kids and dogs over a smorgaboard at the Hilton any day

We are in some ways lucky in Qld because over the summer months the sun is up at 0430 so getting a surf in before work is very easy to do. Yep, it does make the day a bit long but usually the surf buzz lasts till just before lunch time so the arvy can be tolerated most days.

Hey Boof, good luck with your nursing degree. I did the same thing at your age (97 -99) and now hold an ANUM (charge nurse) position. I try to work as many weekends as possible so that I have days off during the week to hit the surf. Past few years I have been in the 95-100K bracket but now looking at reducing my shifts to give me more leisure time Love Autumn/Winter in Vic though it's bloody cold. Sorts the men out from the boys though

Hey Thanks Pete
I am doing well at Uni and really finding the study enjoyable and fascinating after spending 20 years on the end of a shovel or jack pick. I love working with the oldies but I tell you the whole Aged Care system is under staffed and underpaid it is harder work than anything I have done emotionally and physically but you are compelled to do the best job you can.

Hey Mac we finally got those XL pads in will drop some off 2morrow.

Hey Bill we still havent caught up for that coffee I look out for you all the time at Gmount but never see you, you must get out before dawn

Cheers Boof

(Did not happen)
Has anyone out there got the balance between work and surf where it is totally sweet with the boss man?

So to sum up what everyone has been saying:
1. If you value surfing you can sort your life out in a way to get it
2. Money is compensation for not going surfing
3. If your family understand you they will settle for less money and a happier you

Have you thought of using Seabreeze to apply for a single annual leave day - when you see it coming?
No Boss can complain about that.

I should mention here that:
In the 70s I was a Personnel Office in Manly
My current boss is also my wife..

Most of us have to work.... We work for money usually. Most of us don't get paid to go surfing. Most of us need a half decent sum of money to get through life, support a small family, etc.... So money is compensation for working, when you're not surfing....

I'm still a big fan of the "no show (at work)" when it's pumping!

The truth of the matter is i spend 9 hours in shop and a further 4 after doing repairs, So if im lucky i might sneak out for a hour or two a week

But i do end up doing sales in the surf i often open up at 9pm just to sell or trade a board.

Got to make hay while its there

Must be a massive amount of carnage over in NZ to keep you on the sanded for fours per day.

Time management required BP,why not do the repairs during your 9 hour shift in between serving customers

Government job, teaching people how to surf, surf in my breaks and on the outside of 9-5. Just not a good idea to get a fin chop that needs stitches and ask to go to the doc's especially when it was done in your lunch break and its a busy afternoon ahead. Never new why people made fun of government works until I started working there

Hey 62mac, the role is a senior program instructor at a Queensland state government recreation facility on the Goldie with the idea being that we teach kids different types of sports they can get into. This also includes SUP as well.

Hey Boofy good to see your still alive! Thought you had disapeared, see you at Mullum
