Saw this in the paper yesterday and meant to post it. She makes some good points. I imagine Tracks feels a little annoyed that the other mags are not mentioned. I used to love reading Tracks in the old days then as I got older the mag stayed the same and I have not read it for yrs. Come to think of it I hardly ever read a surf mag these days. Still read a few back issues of surfers path occasionally but since my subscription ended a few yrs back I just have not bothered. Who needs a mag when you have The Greenroom

Olive Bowers is not exactly a veteran of the ocean, but at 13 she has enough experience to know what she likes and what she doesn't when it comes to surfing. Best is catching a clean wave in the summer; worst is some of the sexism that still lingers in the sport. What she encountered when she picked up a copy of Tracks magazine, which bills itself as ''the surfers' bible'', prompted her to write a fierce letter to its editor, Luke Kennedy, objecting to the way it portrays women.
As Bowers flicked through the pages, she was surprised to encounter only one picture of a woman: ''She was called 'Girl of the Month' and she wasn't even on a beach. She was just standing in a dark room.'' Then Bowers looked at the magazine's website. ''There was one video of Stephanie Gilmore surfing. That was pretty good. But even if there was a 1000 videos of girls surfing there was still that section that was called 'Girls' and you clicked on it and it was all girls that weren't even surfing. Just in bikinis; models really. That really annoyed me.''

In her letter to Tracks, Bowers says she wants to ''bluntly address the way you represent women in your magazine''. The ''girls'' section enters ''into pages and pages of semi-naked, non-surfing girls. These images create a culture in which boys, men and even girls reading your magazine will think that all girls are valued for is their appearance''.
The year 8 student at Princes Hill Secondary College in North Carlton, whose mother is actor, writer and academic Alice Garner and whose grandmother is one of Australia's best-known writers, Helen Garner, goes on to say that she and her ''posse of female surfers'' are going to spread the word and refuse to purchase or promote Tracks magazine.
''It's a shame that you can't see the benefits of an inclusive surf culture that in fact would add a whole lot of numbers to your subscription list ? I urge you to give much more coverage to the exciting women surfers out there, not just scantily clad women (who may be great on the waves, but we'll never know).'' Kennedy says the magazine does not have a non-girls policy. ''But obviously they are not our primary audience. We have written extensively about female surfers in the past.'' Bowers may be young but she already has strong views about women and sport. She is disappointed that because she has turned 13 she can no longer play interschool football, for example. ''I'm in a girls' league, but in school sports once you're 13, you're not allowed to play the game.'' While her letter, which has also been posted on her mother's Facebook page, was specifically to Tracks, Bowers reckons that women's sport doesn't get a fair go and she points to an imbalance in the coverage of women's sports in newspapers.
She would like Tracks ''to accept that women surf and that's that. You can't turn it into something all sexy ? People would be outraged if there was a surfing thing and there were no men surfing, only pictures of nearly naked men.''
Olive's letter to Tracks

Dear Tracks Surf Magazine,
I want to bluntly address the way you represent women in your magazine. I am a surfer, my dad surfs and my brother has just started surfing. Reading a Tracks magazine I found at my friend's holiday house, the only photo of a woman I could find was ''Girl of the month''. She wasn't surfing or even remotely near a beach. Since then I have seen some footage of Stephanie Gilmore surfing on your website, but that's barely a start. I clicked on your web page titled ''Girls'' hoping I might find some women surfers and what they were up to, but it entered into pages and pages of semi-naked, non-surfing girls. These images create a culture in which boys, men and even girls reading your magazine will think that all girls are valued for is their appearance. My posse of female surfers and I are going to spread the word and refuse to purchase or promote Tracks magazine. It's a shame that you can't see the benefits of an inclusive surf culture that in fact, would add a whole lot of numbers to your subscription list.

I urge you to give much more coverage to the exciting women surfers out there, not just scantily clad women (who may be great on the waves, but we'll never know). I would subscribe to your magazine if only I felt that women were valued as athletes instead of dolls. This change would only bring good.

Olive

Olive is right... Most parts of the industry treat the average female surfer like a second class citizens.

But no one at tracks cares, their market is 15 - 25 year old males.

And name me 1 female surfer that isn't in the sex sells methodology of career projection. Blanchard etc...

I wouldn't have said Sally Fitz is all about sex, but she is very healthy and i guess you could see it that way. Some surfers us sex appeal to sell. I recently surfed with a Uncle of one of the girls and he had toured with them for a few years. He said there was a lot of pressure from sponsors to use sex appeal to sell products.

There was an article a while ago by Courtney Conologe and she talked about that style of marketing and said it wasn't her, but she respected the ones that used it saying what ever works for you. I find the issue is you start to judge the girls differently. For instance you look at Alana who is so heavily featured, but there are so many better female surfers. I think she is the largest followed surfer in the world, or second only to Kelly BUT then you remember that she is also in the top ten and thats a huge achievement..

I think its just sign of the times, but with a young daughter who surfs, i see were she is coming from.

Yep I can understand where she's coming from.

It's not just the mags.... my wife cops it in the surf too.

She often complains that the guys don't follow surf rules when a woman is involved. They drop in on her or more often snake and do everything to get the waves before her.

I've seen lots of old guys and young hipsters pulling this kind of stunt. It's like the rules don't apply to them. But then when I do it to them they get the ****s and can't cope. Karma can be a real bastard

I totally agree and we should listen to what she is trying to say. How can we tell her at 13 what she should or not be feeling about things. It seems to me like she has a wise head on her young shoulders. Its a shame that the woman are not given a bit more coverage of their actual ability. I was way impressed with the standard of the Steph and Carrissa on the Goldie this year - their surfing was streets ahead of the others - amazing style and power. Things you have never really associate with females and surfing.

Females seem to get a pretty fair go around these parts - although there are not that many to be honest. I must admit that I have been guilty over the years of paddling inside woman, but no more than blokes who I think are not up to it either - especially when I lived on the northern beaches and had to battle for waves a lot of the time. These days I don't and thats a function of both my ageing / mellowing and because I do not surf crowded lineups anymore.

The trouble is the surfing industry is worth billion of dollars. Bums and tits are part of marketing strategies and the sponsors want $ returns for their investment. No this isn't the message we should send our youth BUT at what age do you introduce the cold, hard truth?

Well if I was the tracks editor I would put this little.. It's all about me generation child in her place. For a start the girl sends I letter of disapprovment to a magazine she didn't even buy, wants things changed in a magazine she didn't even buy, and if she was on the planet for longer she would know ladies surfing has come leaps and bounds with media sponsorship endorsements prize$$$$ and respect in the line up, I feel it's a slow wheel turning but it is turning its just that kids want the wheel to spin like a top.

See i guess thats the issue. AA gets as much of a following and soon to be sponsorship as people who can out surf her hands down.. But it is reality and will never really change IMHO

But as a dad of a 13 year old surfer, its bloody hard to find good surf bikini bottoms that don't stay up. More often they are only about the look

Yes but one day you will find out just how stubborn 13 yr old girls can be.. Having said that she does like the Mirage girls boardies.. I see a lot of girls on tour so far have worn them, so hopefully that might help
