Does anybody have any experience with the Streetboardz Dragon, Carver with C7 trucks, or SmoothStar skateboards? I currently just skate a traditional board on the flat days, so was wondering whether these boards would have any additional benefit.

Quite like the look of the Streetboardz Dragon but $320 is a lot to drop for a skateboard.

Thanks in advance

I had a mate who has some big board with pneumatic tyres and big trucks. He just called it his Carver... it was great. You could really lean into turns and not spin out, at most get a bit of drift like some surfers do in their full-on carves. It was loose enough to be able to turn across a steep hill/road to control speed. To my mind, was a lot closer to surfing than a standard skateboard, in scale, in the body movements, right down to the muscle burn you'd get after a long ride. But you couldn't put one foot on it and push/cruise along the flats and up the low grades like you can with a standard skatey. I thought it was great. Worth as much as a cheap secondhand surfboard.
Not sure if that's exactly what you have in mind, Big Dawg, but i still say Go For It.

Thanks wavelength. You can get the Streetboardz Dragon with traditional wheels or the pneumatic ones.

Why couldn't you have one foot on the board and push of like a normal skateboard?

i have skated all of your above brands....the carver is probably the best...BUT,its onlygood if ya just want to pump along. semi surfing feeling in carves....too me i would still just stick to a normal set up. i guess for me its good with the kicktail ,which helps me keep more balanced. i have a original truck set up which i like more than then the carver.but even that has its limits...

normal skater withtick tacs and and slides will get you going....this is only my thoughts...

Thanks Crispy, the YouTube stuff in the Carver makes it look a lot easier to generate speed. I've got a longboard that I use for cruising around just wanted something that I could slide the tail out and really lay into turns.

Ahh that makes sense Chrispy.

stick to your longboard and loosen the trucks up...then get them hips wiggling bend your knees and drag your hand on the ground.....go in with speed with your weight on the tail...then shift your weight to the front and kick that tail out......ao much fun trying so many different ways

once in a while chrispy.

if your looking to improve your surfing forget it.

all carvers do is get you to lean BUT SURFING DOESNT WORK THAT WAY.

in fact it is more likely to make you worse. all you have to do on a carver is lean but surfing requires compression /extension , rotation and front and back movements

but if your just looking for a nice feeling skate go for it.

Did you ride it on hills Lacey? I used my mate's on a fairly steep, very smooth downhill and I thought that was where it came into its own. Fair enough if you didn't think so, I probably dont do any compression/extension, rotation or front to back movements, on land or sea.

Salty, I don't think it will make you a better surfer, but I still reckon, on hills, it complements your surf training more than the average skateboard.

And, also yeah to what Chrispy said.

Geez, I've hedged my bets there.

If it doesn't help improve your surfing then why do the advanced surf school people use it for technique training.

oh they do. but on normal skateboards. slow soft tic tac movements where you slide or drag the front wheels around and then place down softly smooth so the board keeps rolling ie flow

build up from there to every surfing move. hacks, slashes carves slides cutties etc etc. you only need 5 metres long of concrete

an Australian elite junior coach taught me this.

he absolutely bans any of this surfers from skating carvers, those boards that twisted in the middle, pivot trucks and any other weird and wonderful skate type thing.

he could pick when one of them had been on one by the way they surfed

most don't want to here it including me.

Saw on a clip, I think on Seabreeze, that Skip Frye skates before surfing to free up the hips/knees etc. I've been tempted to get a longboard for commuting but broke my arm falling off in my youth skateboarding on those god awful solid wood deck/concrete wheeled things from the early 70s and don't want to put surfing at risk by spending 6 weeks in a cast.

If I had money to burn I'd buy one of those big electric ones.
I could see myself cruising to the beach on one of those, board tucked under my arm

I have a smoothstar and struggled to get rid of railbite. The front truck, while easy to pump and fun, has a very limited top end speed.

Now, a Gbomb Illuminati...well, thats a a whole different kettle of fish. I can manage about 30km/h as a top speed and maintain 20 km/h no worries at all for 5 kilometres. They are super carvy. I have Dont Trip Poppy trucks which are just the duck guts as far as I am concerned. I also played with the bushings for my style and weight and went firmer on the roadside rear bushing and softer boardside, firmer road side on the front truck to get better rebound.

I used to run and ride bikes but knee and ankle injuries mean thats not possible but I can whip out 5-10kms on the skatey. The Gbomb also has a far more surf style than my Sector 9 pintail or the Smoothstar.

Best you don't ask the price for all that though.

Long distance pumping - its the shiz.

It carves well. There's a couple of different styles to ldp on it. The traditional wiggle which gives a higher top speed but uses more energy, or the slower, carving style which is pretty surfy in feel. It's still a traditional truck. If the trucks were on Mermaid would the surfiness of it be questioned? The gbomb just makes pushing easier, but doesn't change the motion of a traditional board. The laminate layup does provide some excellent flex and rebound. The gbomb is great for practicing surf hacks. Like every simulation of any activity it is only ever a simulation.

Carver and smooth star trucks are completely different.

And I don't reckon tic tac is worth much for surf training, but then again I ain't heading for any HP surf school either.

And really, a skateboard is never going to improve your surfing. Surfing is going to improve your surfing. Skating is just fun crosstraining.
