Mooloolaba is not know for its surf. PT Cartwright on the east side of the river mouth is the closest decent wave.

If I were you I would head down to Alexandra Headland, about 3km, there is a right hand point break and numerous beach breaks heading all the way to Maroochy River mouth.

Hey Boofy, ET is on the money with his advice. Mooloolaba gets a nice punchy beachbreak (very) occasionally but it's sheltered and needs pretty big swell before it really works. And when it's really big it gets some good SUP waves out near the end of the rock wall. But Alexandra Headland and The Bluff are just over the hill to the north and they are good mellow spots for longboarding or SUPing (can get crowded) and then the Maroochy rivermouth and adjacent beachbreak peaks (another km or two along) are great for surfing and SUPing. This is all in about a 3 or 4km stretch from Mooloolaba. The point you see on that surfcam is Pt Cartwright (around the bay and over the river from Mooloolaba). As ET says it gets a nice righthander on its day. There are surf cams for Alex and Maroochydore beaches too and for Buddina/Kawana (which is on the other side of Pt Cartwright) and is an open beach which is a nice spot when the swell is small and the winds are northerly (seems like most of the time). It's about four or 5km south of Mooloolaba by road. So yep... you may need/want to take a short drive - but you will find some nice, user-friendly spots in pretty close proximity to your base.
The Mooloolaba Surf Club is a great spot for a beer.
