I liked the tak Scorpion way more. All the fin options go.well on the tak.. The thing I liked more on the sumo.was the nose lift,but then you couldn't get to the front of the board like the tak.

prob won't be doing much noseriding on a 6'8" I've heard they paddle like a freight train get onto anything

I rode.a.7"2 sumo.and your right,you had no.chance. On the 6'6 Tao I rode, a lighter rider than me.could. I could get five over it.

The smaller tak easily outpaddled the sumo. Don't get me wrong,I really liked the sumo,I just think for the same type of board the tak is all over it

Lol,if we are.going for the pimp fest, I would have just recommended the bee sting from sdr that I have on order. Im replacing three boards with this bad boy

I briefly had a Sumo (MCt shaped) but I didn't enjoy it at all. Too much volume for me though.
My Tak scorpion 6'8" is still safely in the racks after a few years.
Beachbeat eggs are well worth a look.
The 7'ers are pushing cult following status around Maroochydore-Caloundra since all the shop staff have them and love them.
They've been steadily refining them and testing them locally and in Indo as well.
Cool thing is they have demos so you don't have to lay your money down without being sure.
Matt Keane shapes them.
I have ridden the demo but since I have my favourite Woosley vquad I didn't see the need to double up with one.
But...My mate from the Gold coast came up on the weekend, just past, to buy the 7' egg which I'd recommended to him. He'd been looking at the slew of retro eggs available around his locale but I'd been saying this is the shape you need for small beachies and crowded Gold coast points on high tide.
They have nicely refined rails with a chine forward and a single to double concave bottom. No old skool V or rolled V here.
Normally they've only made them in 2 lengths, 6'6" and 7' with the shorter one being for lighter surfers and the longer for heavier.
Lately though they've been playing around with the design and shaping diamondtails in 6'-6'6" out of the 7' pre-shapes.
My mate and I went in to get his new 7'er which he'll use as his longboard since he's a lightweight.
However....
In the rack was a quad fish that had been shaped out of one of the 7'ers pre-shapes.
Basically it was the front and middle of the 7' egg with only the tail shaped into a swallow tail so it measured 6'3".
Couldn't help myself and curiousity got the better of me as to how this egg/fish would go?
how well would this egg/fish mash up work? So we walked out with 2 shiny resin tinted sticks.
Had 2 short surfs on it in absolutely miserable windswell dribble but its ability to plane is showing it is going to be a tonne of fun in the small stuff.
Interesting experiment though...all egg then a fish tail.
He bought the 9" Alkali fin to go with it since he already has a shorter single and side bites to run in it as well.

That is a fantastic looking paint job.

Resin tint...even better.
Not bad value for $995.

Yep, same same but different.. one I looked at was a bit trimmed down from those dims.

They really are a strange looking beast.

my mid lengths tend to be a lot narrower and thinner. I think my lb has a narrower nose then the Sumo.

But for a summer fun board they look good.

This my old 6'6 CM Egg... it's not all that dissimilar in outline to the Sumo. I love the area under the chest for extra planing and paddling power. You are right -- this sort of thing can be great great fun for summer waves.

The summer of the Sumo. Hope you can share your thoughts and maybe a pic or two once you've had the chance to christen it.

Had a couple of surfs on it. Hardly surfed lately so bit hard to get a good read on it but got a few fun ones on it already.

The local shops have the GSI Sumos on special for $595 with fins at the moment. But it's really hard to find anyone raving about the Sumos anywhere online, even the quality-built Byron-made ones. There's very little feedback on a board that has been around for a while now. Thought I'd give this thread a bump and see if anyone else has anything nice - or not so nice -to say about them....

He's the fellow Breezer/surfer, home renovator and table maker who has sometimes shared the details of his drunken online impulse-purchasing of surfboards.

It's a term to describe the purchase of surf related equivalent whilst pissed. McH started the trend - several other breezers have followed suit since

The Croweater Mac is a legend

Everyone should have one of these. It is either the most, or second most versatile board I have owned. Knee high to triple overhead. Fantabulous board with a solid glass job.
Mines 6'10". And I can get on the nose at 90kgs.

Sumo might be a good choice if you're surfing punchy beach breaks. My 2 cents worth of pimping this was far and away the best and most versatile mid length i ever had. Could nose ride it pretty easy but it's 7'6 and it was good off the tail. . Grant does them from 6'6 to 8' squash tail or a more pulled in round tail. Rocker is pretty flat with a light single to double through the bottom. Heaps of fun .

I would never by one of the GSI ones. Read a few bad reports on some of the Sumo's being beat up pretty bad due to ****ty materials.

Sumo is a fun board, paddles good, enjoyable to ride.

Won't say anymore cause the anti mid length whingers will get all teary about an actual surfboard thread..
