Morning all.
I am after some advice on getting a Mal to mainly use up in Byron over summer hols
and very occasionally in small Sydney waves.
I have been surfing my whole life on shorties (i'm 45 and fit / 74 kegs) and ride 5'9 to 5'11 and around 28 to 30 litres.
I have also owned a McTavish 7'6 Carver PU for around 10 years with no issues.
Are there any cheapies that will cut it at 2 foot Pass Byron for 1 or 2 weeks a year mainly.
Options I see are 600ish poly boards
1050ish firewires
1500+ Bennett or Mctavish
I,d like to go around 9 foot
Any advice appreciated.

Mate if your only going to use it in Byron for a week or two,why not hire a board from mctavish just book the board you want in advance.

Ask LL but a beau young Seaplane in a 9 or 9'4 maybe?
I'd go 9'4 and I'm a touch lighter then you.

Or ECS are another cheap good quality option or buy a 2nd hand one. You'll get a good brand at a good price if you keep an eye out.

Definitely hire it in Byron From McT's if that's the only place you'll use it but if you want a keeper that you can play with in Sydney as well, then Check out the "Surfboard warehouse" , Sea Plane and Vintage Log.

Cheap as chips, good functional logs and will do the Job nicely. 9'4" should give you heaps of opportunity at your weight to paddle into ripples and enjoy a fun surf whilst your buddy's are on the beach having a winge about there being no surf.

If you want to Spend top end. There's plenty of options just need to work out if you want to ride a log like a log or a Long-board like a performance board. McT's and Bennets are a good option here IMO they'll be able to offer you both.

Ok my take, you sell a 1500 board for 800 buy a new one for 650 then how much are you going to get 400 maybe, thats a massive drop and a huge step to get back to where you were.

I take it your from Sydney. Check out Annesley - very reasonable prices (around $850) on longboards and excellent quality / Auz made. Other then that I reckon FireWire longboards are the go. I have one and its held up well.

Im still yet to organise anything for my trip but have my eye on a few on gumtree, but just want to hedge my bets

Just shot a text JB I'll come back once I have the info.

edit- ok 250 for a weeks hire and they have just about every model as hire boards so thats a huge range.

My mate said if theres a particular board you want it would be best to pre book it,he also said that if the
conditions change they are happy to change the board you have booked for something more suitable.

Buy one of Macs - sure he have one going by then - then just sell it when you leave - or take back to WA and clean up on the transaction
