anyone getting a new one for the warmer months? anyone tend to surf a different board in summer to winter?

we get lots of shorter beachy waves in summer and a fair few shorie type waves so thinking i need a groveler for summer . Been looking around and thinking something 6'0 x 21 x 2.5 probably a quad. plenty of volume in the guts but nice low rails.. had a 6'8 last year but just to much volume, looks like it will have a new home in the next few weeks freeing up some funds for a new one.

so suggestions? Comments... Criticisms...

You are welcome to take my Sweet Potato for a run SP - its a ripper - although with your weight you would want one smaller - I initially brought it for summer stuff but its my go to board these days for anything under 4ft. I saw a bloke out at one of the reefs with a diff fin setup handling a few bigger ones one day - but he looked to be nursing it through the turns.

I am flat out the next few weeks but then I shall be pretty free so could probably come up yr way for a surf or cd meet ya at Catho - wed and friday arvo's the pub has topless bar chicks from 4-6pm as well Just need the wind to be SW to justify it to the fiancé

Yeah, i had a look the other day at them, my only thing is i dont want to go to short, the firewire site reckons i should be on the 5'4 in the SP.
going from a 9'0 to a 5'4 might feel a bit weird.
I can actually get a 5'4 off the shop up here to have a go on so might do that, but still keen to catch up for a wave although my gentlemans hours will cease on monday back to a 9-5 job. which is good on one front ($) but bad i wont be surfing the uncrowded hours of 9-2 weekdays. The other thing is, id like to be able to ride it on the bigger days when paddling a longy through a solid beachie takes all the fun out of it, so thinking the SP might not cover that?

Any banks 5 minutes north of you? i dont want to name it? so cryptic... where the rock fisherman go to die? thinking it might have been worth a drive to avoid the holiday crowd, although it probably gets crowded as now 2?

Congrats on the new job......funny you mention that place - I was going to shoot up there on the w/e but did not get around to it - are you talking about the spot with the 7 min walk? Yes reasonable banks from what I hear - it will still have a few bod's on it but nothing compared to Newy - mid week you can often get it alone The other spot you might be talking about normally has a bunch of campers staying there - standards are generally low in the water so no worries although there wis normally a couple of fellas from Swansea way who rip Very hit or miss with the banks there. Watch out for the naked old fellas.

The other board in the firewire collection to think about is the Potato-nator - I had a good look at these a while back and think they might be the ultimate one board travelling companion - just take an extra set of fins for the bigger days. I spoke to a fella who got one of these and he never rides his SP anymore -finds this board a lot better and with a much bigger range. If my SP was to die I think this would be its replacement.

As the name implies, the POTATO-NATOR is the result of Dan Mann gene-splicing two of his most popular models: the SWEET POTATO and the DOMINATOR. With a longer rail line and less girth than the SWEET POTATO, and a slightly pulled in nose similar to the DOMINATOR, the POTATO-NATOR is meant to be ridden 4"-6" longer than a POTATO, and approx. 2" shorter than the DM. The double concaves are softer than the SWEET POTATO and while the overall rocker has been increased slightly to enhance performance, the low entry rocker remains which makes paddling a breeze. Designed primarily for 2'-4' surf, the POTATO-NATOR will hold its own in 3'-5' as well. Fin placement is optimized to be ridden as a quad, but don't be afraid to throw in a small, knubby trailer fin to help this hybrid 4-finner come alive in new ways. Splice and dice it up!

Thanks, started the job today with a trip to Sydney, not the best start, I try and avoid that place. just got home, at least the blokes I'm working for like a beer or 2.

Na, I wasn't thinking of the one with a walk, before you mentioned it. I was thinking of the one near the campers.

Yeah I looked at the potatonator, as you said looked a bit more refined. Might take one for a test drive.

$ Thanks for all the Pimps suggestions boys.

Hi Ted, I have had a few FW's and now a Potatonator. I'm not so sure about it particularly as a 1 board quiver. The tail is bigger than you think and catches in anything hollow. It does handle bigger/steeper waves than my Sweet Potato but with the pointy nose it doesn't have than speed that the SP had on a flat section. For the right conditions it is good. Full, shoulder high waves it just rips.

Can not believe I missed this Daneli - dam! Interesting comments you are making there. I guess I was not really meaning it would be the ultimate one board quiver but at least it would give you a fair range of conditions to work with - the conditions that we get 80% of the time. I am alwatys feeling conflicted with the present quiver. I love to take my SP with me everywhere but then I need to also bring a second board with me and sometimes thats just a pain in the neck. What size SP do you ride and Potatonator? How do you find the paddle performance of each one in those sizes? Will have to make sure we catch for a surf next time around!
