everyones different, sooooo many variables,my opinion and approach is trial and error will get you there. 1/4 in movements, start from the fin fully forward working back. Once ive pegged the perfect spot I like a particular fin, I mark the skeg box As I tend to run two to three different fins an a board pending on waves and conditions.

What he said but I tend to start mine right back and move it forward. being further back means you have to draw out your turns a lot more whereas further forward means you can make smaller/sharper turns... Personally though i'm not a fan of the "one size fits all" type of fin. I prefer a "D" fin style for nice long runners where your looking to stroll to the nose and then more a "Dolphin" or "Greenough" style for sharper turns and speed.
