Hi, I've just bought my first single fin so looking for some advice on the best fin for the board.

It's a 6'8 x 22 x3 round tail with a single concave bottom running from the nose into double concave through fin area and out tail.

Appreciate that it's not a longboard, but thought you guys would be able to provide the best advice.

Thanks in advance

I use the 7' Wayne Lynch fin in my singles around that size.

unfortunately, like with all fins, small differences in rake, flex and area make a big difference in performance. For example, the Soar 7' fin looks quite similar but has far less drive than the Lynch, but turns sharper in a pivotty, not rail turn, way (which I didn't like). I also have a mate who loves his takes out tuna fin things that I can't stand - they sort of load up/slide then spring through the turn.

Start with a 7' dolphin fin from a reputable manufacturer, play with positioning in the box (I normally have mine about an inch and a half forward from rear set) and in six months time get another fin and have a play.

Theres no perfect fit for everyone but I hope I have given you a decent starting point.

Top reply from Drip.

I'd agree and say bout 7inch.
Upright rake and a fair amount of base. Back in the box if you want the board to be pivoty. Also less flex..

If you want to draw out your turns get a bigger more raked fin and push it up in the box.

I like the Christenson captain fin fin. Tudor fin is alright too if you want a more drawn out fin.

Just a quick question, sorry for the hijack.

Has anyone in here ever swapped fins on the same day surfing like a few fins?
or do you wait till the next surf. I have always been the later.

Thanks thedrip, exactly the type of response I was looking for!

So you think something like this will be my best option to start? www.wetfins.com.au/surfboard-fins/longboard-fins/fcs-fins-7-dolphin-black-clear-hex/

Yes...

The changes are only very subtle..

It is worth going with Theory...
If you want more Drive, go for a larger fin, and/or moving back a little.
True Ames do great fins. As do McTavish, and Fluid Foils / FCS find to go into fin boxes.

Chances are, if you love the look of the fin, and love how it looks on the board, then you have a pretty good set-up!... Half of it is in the mind!.. LoL!...

One thing I will say, the sharper leading edges on modern fins are great, plus "modern-ish" materials... Obviously George Geenough was making some very beautiful effective fin back in the late 60's! ... Far out, 50 years ago! .... Scary!

Old rule of thumb, 1 inch per foot of board... Add a 1/2, to 1 inch for your weight...

Pick a beautiful Greenough inspired Tuna Fin, Dolphin Fin, and you will enjoy!

Simple...

My modernised Tracker goes unreal!...
Single Fin...
Point and Shoot...
You even have to surf it slightly "old-school"...
Slide into the first bottom turn, get back up to the top, and if you are on along fast wall, this 2nd bottom is nuts fast!... Faster than a thruster, and feels unreal!... Surfing long walls at Winki on a modernised Tracker is "Bucket List" stuff! Makes you cry with joy!

The wisdom of Skip Frye:
Ninety percent of the surfing public uses too much fin. Big fins just increase a board's drag. If you get rid of that extra fin area, you're going to trim so much faster and blast through sections. Over the years my fins have gotten smaller and smaller.

That one has more rake and less tip area than I like. But that's not to say you won't like it.

This is the one I use, and the FCS one Simondo recommends is pretty similar. I have them both.

Hey Simondo, how hard is that modernised Tracker to surf?

Do you know how big you can go with these?

I like the concept of a Tracker but don't want to make things harder than they already are. i.e. I'm old and slow

Cheers
