Has anyone given the C-Drive fins a crack? They sound good and have lots of pretty colours.....I am thinking of getting a set for my short board.



Early in the development stage it became apparent that our design goal of producing a fin that generated more drive but gave up nothing in the way of manoeuvrability was not only possible, but a little short sighted. Over time, our R&D process made it increasingly clear that it was possible to create a fin that generated more drive and at the same time was more manoeuvrable. It was this revelation that was to fuel continued research and development over the ensuing years.

I have a set and have used them a bit. My set are actually too small for me to be used a straight tri-set in my wide tailed shortboards. I will try them next as rears in my Quad SUP. I usually use H2 sides or Inside Foiled MF Templates from FCS here with MRTFX in the front. It will be an interesting comparison.

They pretty much do as they describe. Offer drive from the base and a narrow tip to allow a bit of flex for the natural feeling. I know a couple of shapers who still use them religously.

Give them a go, they might be for you the best fins ever created.

Thanks SP - yeah that is what prompted me to ask. I had a quick read but was not convinced after it....partly because I did not know the characters responding! Although NC and Pridore are worthy !!!

Thanks CMC - I might just do that! I like the idea of more drive and being loose at that same time.....something that seemed previously not possible....I am thinking of putting them on my Al Merrick POD - I need something to loosen it up a bit more but am reluctant to lose to much the other way.

Given your comment re too small for a wide tailed board - should I ear on the side of caution and go a size bigger?

i used the thruster set on one board and the worked just as they say, i was very happy with them, when i put them in another board they just didn't seem to work as well.

Hahaha Realsurf can be a bit like that funniest and possibliy one of the strangest forum on the net, the poo thread is gold.

I was actually looking for info on Future controllers, looking at a set for a wide tailed quad, anyone have any comments on them?

Just off topic a little, but I am trying to find a set of timber fins for my new Quad.
They have to fit FCS plugs and trying to find them in size large.
Just trying to give my new sled a little old skool street cred
Have looked at the two big guys ( FCS and Shapers ) They do em for thrusters, but the don't do any timber fins for quads.
Have found some on the Reiley's site but they are over $ 200
Does anyone know of anyone other fin makers that may be doing these?

Looking at that video I can see how they may work.

I've done a Lacey for years playing with fins and setups.
Its all sorted on my HP boards a couple of years back.However on a log its another story.A 10 inch
single stranded worked well on my old redline which I sold and the
10 inch hatched on my current sunset board works well but the board
doesn't if that makes sense.I played with 8 and 9 inch fins on logs to
loosen them up but lost a sh-t load of drive which is not what logging's
about,there is a reason the board manufactures whack a 10 inch in a
log.

So if these fins do both its a win win,let us know how they go ,sounds
promising.

There's a few things going on with these fins.

1) Long base - there's no doubt you get nice drive from long bases to fins.
2) The cut away - they talk of them releasing easily. On release, weight is transferred the front of the board, and onto the boards mid rails, allowing the rear of the board to start to pop out of the water, and the first thing to come out of the water is the long base, then all you're left with "in the water" is a little "GL" style fin, or little "thumb" style fin.

It would be great to give these guys the same fin template, with the "rear cut away", and get their feedback. It would probably be a dog of a fin, with poorer rail to rail release.

Large Merrick Fins also give nice drive.

My personal preference is definitely 1+2 set-ups and big Merricks (for rounded pins). (1+2 being Box single with side bites). But I haven't tried the C-Drives.

I definitely noticed less rail to rail release when trying out full sized side fins, with a box single fin. Just a case of "too much total fin area" I think.

McTavish's GXQ side fin set-up does work very nicely. Or just plain GX. I think GL is too small for me, and G3 on the sides is just a little bit too big, but probably a better option than the normal sized fins, which are roughly similar is area to G5's.

If you can get a free demo for the shorty, I'd go for it. As soon as you get OK conditions, you'll know within 2-3 waves if they are for you.

Not really, most of the time they buy an installation kit. Boxes and fins. And they sure don't put the nice ones in the kit, for futures the quad is usually a vector 2 438s, standard construction.
So basically the cheapest ones.

I think he ment size wise, and I have to agree. Ive tried many different fins and come back to the same size that a shaper recomended to me ages ago.
I generally concentrate on the fins construction ie flex more than anything these days. My faves are the DHD-2

I go with whatever Lacey recommends
