Greetings guys, Im one of the pesky shortboard riders however im visiting your longboard page.

I just recently got my hands on a 9'4 SEL longboard its got EXP on the top near the nose. When I get home ill put up some pics.

I have ridden it and to be honest had an absolute ball, hadn't ridden a longboard for years since I used to borrow me mates old boys as a grom.

Couple of rookie questions,

Is this a good board?

Every time I get up near the nose I can get 5 over but not 10, obviously theres a lack of time spent on it and certain skills that im lacking. but is this board big enough? Im 100kg?

The nose looks like its flatter for hangin ya toes.

Fin set up is a big single with a bit of rake and two smaller flyers. What will it go like if I just whack a single in it...

Its got a fin box, who does good fins? I want to put a single in there...

Also once you set a rail how do you do a proper turn on it, is there some sort of longboarding trick or secret handshake/talisman..
Serious I see really light guys on vids ripping them round in turns, I can throw a short board around so Im quite perplexed at my cookery. Obviously Ill keep battling away I can hold a line take drops and get little cover ups but turning this thing is sooooo different.
Any longboard rookie mistakes you can iron out would be appreciated..

(The thing paddles like a dream must be 100 litres or something)

Hey dude,

The board, it's a great board if you enjoy surfing it

Fins, I love Alkali or Glide fins. Both are hand Australian made and foiled and go awesome. Hatchets and "D"'s are my weapon of choice, great for nose time but heavy to turn.

Turning, get your back foot over the front of the centre fin and drive into it, you can do adjustments up the board and even in the nose but get to the tail for anything serious.

Cross step, don't shuffle, it's easier to learn a new habit than breaking a wrongly learned bad habit and stepping is the true essence of Longboarding.

Enjoy broo, I used to be a short boarder, did what you are doing and these days the shorties rarely eeeeeergh daylight.

Cheers

thanks for the heads up, i havent been crosstepping i sort of walk up there, ill make a mental note. Ya dead right i dont want to learn bad habits cause it takes ages longer to change ya mindset.
will have a google at the fins ya mentioned.
tried uploading pics but i cant on me phone ?? normally can will try again tomorrow.
the middle fin in the fin box on inspection looks like i can slide it back about 30-40mm I think ill have a play with that and foot positioning.cheers mate few little tricks always go a long way

Hey dude,

Fin position, right back for hold on the nose and further forward for turning.

Longboarding and the trip to the nose is all about going with the wave and finding correct trim and positioning... But dont take it from me, I'm pretty crap learn from the experts...

I'd google:
Tom Wegener nose riding, I've posted it here before and its a great detailed article.

Cyrus Sutton epic TV, has a great 4 vid "how to" cross step, nose ride, trim etc

Wingnuts Art of Longboarding, the whole vid is on YouTube, it's real kooky but the info is great, he goes into basics of stuff, turning, getting out, catching waves etc which is great bcs your practiced short board techniques here are all different once you add 4" of board.

Check out the "More Longboarding" thread, it's the best thing on this forum and a brilliant collection of classic vids.

Enjoy
