Any one got any tips on pulling off a roundhouse cutback? Have got into the hang of getting ahead of the curl on my backhand and can swing the board around and head back to the break but cant seem to get it back up to hit the foam section? Not even sure if you would call it a roundhouse on your backhand? Just throwing it out there.

souwester,i can't help you mate i just go out there and try anything and if it comes off all and well, but having to ride backhand most of the time you have got me thinking,it all just happens so quick.Ithought mac or BB might give you some clues all the best with it.

You have to get it right round so that you are heading back up as you go toward the foam....get as much speed as you can go high to start the turn...keep pushing through the turn (very important as it generates speed) aim back at the top of the foam and then rebound as you would for a normal floater/reo......maintaining speed is the key if you flatten the turn or don't push you will end up facing the wrong with no where to go.....

Cheers Tux will work on the speed coming back around, sounds like I am not carrying enough into and like you said you end up with no where to go. Also need to try it on longer waves maybe. Certainly feels good when it starts to come together. Only started them when I saw some footage of Colin Phillips (I think thats his name) doing it and thought it looked like fun!

No S**t!
I have had a few moments where I thought I was going to seperate my torso from trying to bring it back around. End up crouching down and trying to grab a rail ha ha. All good though, I like having moves to work on, keeps up the stoke.

I also like the stall cutback if thats what you call it? Just bend the knees, lean back, dig in the rail, then set up for another trim along the face.. love it

I reckon they are very similar to the reo - especially on a longboard. There is that point where you are driving hard off the tail and have to get your weight forward to initiate the turn and then get back and use the swing weight of the mal to drag you through the turn and back onto the face. Staying on the tail and driving looks very impressive but if you get it wrong and hit the foamball with too much weight on the tail you may well end up with 9 feet of fibreglass smashing you in the face. I think one of the main keys is to ensure you have plenty of speed and are as high as you can get on the wave before you even attempt the move. For me the ultimate set up for it is to have a wave where you are able to do a powerful bottom and maintain maximum speed up the face (not too vertical or you will wash off too much speed) then get nice and high and if you feel you still have all your speed and drive then a nice big smooth off the top and set up that big cutty. The biggest danger on a mal is getting caught in the foam and being dragged over sideways into 6 inches of water (something I have considerable experience in surfing cooly at low tide)

It's really hard to break down a move into all its components. After a while a particular move just becomes natural.. A few years ago I was scanning one of those how to surf better books at the newsagent and one piece of advice struck me. When you are performing a cutback, or any maneuvre, turn your head in the direction you want to go. With a bit of luck, your body follows.

I've used this technique and it seems to work.
That bit of advice was enough for me and I didn't need to buy the book.

Too true rune,my son was having trouble finishing off big round house cutties,he was always, all most there but fell towards the end.
I told him to always turn your head and your body will follow, did he listen to old fart dad,of course not until I made him seat and watch a dvd and the next surf we sat down and watched good surfers slashing, hmm now he is listening and slashing complete moves.

aim high on the foam, sight the top of the foam as you come round (you gotta make sure you have gone far enough away from the foam before you begin ur cutty) then as you bout to hit the foam lifts your arms and rotate your head and arms and shoulders to rebound off. importnat to lift arms to unweight board and allow it to get up on foam so it doesnt bog and you gotta rotate head and shoulders to initiate turn nice and early

gotta majke srue you get enough disctance from foam tho before you begin cutty, this is v important and then sight where you wanna hit on foam

heaps of practice n youll b nialin it

hope this helps.
