Have had a go at a couple of mates logs/old mals and really struggled to get the hang of them. I love the idea of getting the hang of the trad. longboard moves so am keen to learn.

Is it a mindset, skillset or purely the conditions? Over here in the west we don't seem to have as many of the long machine like walls that over east is blessed with but I still see guys getting to the nose and doing some really stylish log surfing.

Like anything the good guys (and girls) make it look very easy in any sort of conditions. Personally I find nice glassy long walls the easiest. Bloody hard work too. It looks so easy but in a reality you need to put some work in. Check all those videos that SP posts and see how they move their boards around. Practice that cross-step around the house until its second nature. And enjoy. I have added a heap more surf days to the annual count since getting a log.

S/Wester,yes i am hearing you i only got on my old mal last week after a real long lay off and yes they are a total different ride, paddle, glide etc to the modern log,as you i also would like to master the old girl but it is so much easier just to jump on the modern log these days. However i am going to commit myself to riding it more and more, just remember to slow everything down, turns cutback etc but once you get it trimming look out if any one drops in as there is no stopping the old girl.

They feel weird after riding a shortboard. You really gotta make sure you get on the tail & the turning circle is so much wider. My log is epoxy, so its a modern one with a much lower swing weight. Still bloody heavy when the walk to the water isn't real close though. Although this WA winter has been the most consistently small in comparison to any other year I can think of, winter's not so much the time of the good old log. Much easier in summer when waves are under waist high & clean. Awesome thing about a log is once you get gliding you can ride a bump that never breaks all the way to the beach & they can be your best or most fun waves

Got a '67 9'1" Gordon Woods it surfs on nothing, paddles on early and will punch through any white water if you can hang on.
Couldnt surf it every day and no way can I surf it like the old mal experts.
Funny but when you get your back foot in the right place with the right pressure it turns without any weight. (If you can (not me) the drop knee cutty is a classy turn).
Just something special about riding these old boards, guess its the same as a classic car.
Once you find a good one even if you pay a bit for it you'll never let it go!!

I've had a few logs and they ride nice but take some getting used to. If I was looking for this type of board now I'd go for a few modern tweaks to make it more versatile.
