I just got back from Hawaii where I rented mals for my time on Oahu and was so impressed with the rental that I thought I would post about it.

We were on Oahu for 10 days and rented mals from Hawaii Surfboard Rentals for 9 days I think (www.hawaiisurfboardrentals.com). For the time on the Island it cost us $120 per board (which is very when you account for excess luggage costs and transport hassles). All boards were surftech.

We were really well looked after as I swapped a board twice, for no additional charge and the boards were dropped to and picked up from our accommodation each time, at Ala Moana and the North Shore. I got a 2 inch ding completely through the rail of one of the boards, so I swapped it for another (better) board and the repair was charged to my account - only $20.

The boards were all water tight, light (no water logging) in very good condition, with good fins and leggies and they weren't covered in big stickers saying they were rentals, so we were able to just blend into lineups. The range of boards is good, with a mix of high performance and traditional styles of mals and shortboards. It was easy to adapt from riding fibreglass boards at home to the surftechs.

If I hadn't been traveling to other Islands I might have taken my own mal, but didn't want the hassle, risk of dings or the excess luggage (which for our trip would have been at least $70 and I think $110 per board). I also didn't have to worry about the 2.77m (9'1") limit, even though most of the boards we hired were 9'0". It also gave me a chance to try some different boards.

Since these guys did such a good job, I though I would post about it.

That's great info thanks. When I was there we hired from Koa Board Sports and like you,we could swap boards anytime we liked without charge. What a great set up,one block from our beachfront hotel which had a board rack next the Dukes Bar and the lock cost 25 US and a 100% refund on return of the key on checkout.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds great!

Yes, inter-island can be expensive I've heard.

I had a 6'6 rounded pin with me, and it was pretty cheap, or nearly free to lug around. But I've heard of horror stories just on Price, for multiple board - board bags.

Took a different 6'6 rounded pin in Indo. Pretty easy to get around with 1 x 6'6, and a small back-pack. Towels, etc get stuffed into Board Bag as padding.
