Very very sad news and a great loss to surfing. Without doubt one of the greatest shapers of all time and in my opinion the creator of the best surfboard ever made - the ITP !!!

R.I.P Mr Takayama - you will be sadly missed.

No - havent been able to ride a mal' for a long time mate. Thinking seriously about getting a custom sup made up in original ITP colours as a tribute though.

Terrible news, at just 68 he really deserved a much longer retirement.

Especially when you Consider the joy that his designs bought to so many

I, guess the old ticker finally gave up, it almost got him a few years back.

He had a truck load of stents put in.

There's some really nice photos on this link. Old & New.

Donald T - Longboarding Pioneer
(potential book title!)

www.legendarysurfers.com/2010/08/donald-takayama.html

PS - one of the reasons I was really keen to head to the Maldives with Bob McTavish, was that it would be one of the last opportunities to ever get that sort of time with such a Longboarding Legend. I will be able to tell my son about that in years to comes. It feels like it gives me closer to link to the roots of Longboarding. Could have easily been a 'Donald T' Maldives Trip.

I felt weird today glassing my board - its based off a Tak Model T but I changed the tail, nose and concave under the nose.....but it will always be the Tak that influenced my first shape. My first 666 was a Tak.

I know where there's a spanking new 903 woodie Tak , wonder if it will stay there much longer as it will become a collectors item now - too young to go so much that he gave , a true waterman

yes very sad. he cooked an awesome teriaki chicken on the barbi at the world titles in malibu for all the crew, i will never forget that yummy chicken, think it was about 1996, the same year some kook got punched out for cruising through the comp area.

Does anyone know why he called one of his boards The Model T?
