it wasn't so corny back then smh....I can remember sitting in the front row of the Kensington Doncaster theater with a bunch of mates and Bruce was doing the whole east coast with slippery when wet or it may have been barefoot adventure...he didn't have a sound track he ran the speel and then bolted down to the stage and narrated the whole movie himself...he was even at the door to take your ticket...complete one man show...we were starved for any surf movie then so it was an incredible treat to see....we would walk from there to maroubra and sleep on the beach so we could be into it at dawn...very heady days...as far as learning manoeuvres from those movies, I dont think so....modern longboarding is so much better....the old movies are great to learn style...if you didnt have style on the old heavy boards you went nowhere
It probably wasn't back then but a mate lent me a box set with about 6 movies in it and I could only watch a bit at a time but some great footage of guys like Phil Edwards , Dora and the early Hawaiian footage. The 60's stuff was a bit before my time but I ve got a mate from Cronulla who is in his 60's and he reckons the crowd used to go berserk at those old surf flicks so I can imagine they would have been memorable days. Not knocking Bruce Brown because he made a lot of surf flicks but I find turning the sound down an easy option.
I can remember going to see surf movies at the opera house but that was late 70's
As for those heavy boards you can't cheat on them.
I guess that's why you see guys buying these old school boards and selling them. They're a lot harder to ride than the modern boards?
