Its a bloody tragic event. Not happy. Have spent many a day out at Matakana in the good old days. I used to hate having to paddle the tinnie back from the island at the end of a long day with that fast moving current. That place is an absolute paradise. Very similar to South Straddie for you Aussies - just a lot less people and a lot less swell. But when it gets swell it is pretty much the best beachie in NZ (although TB may argue a strong case for one of his locals - Pines).

Matakana Island - Puni's Farm
The gem of the coast - an awesome beach break created by a natural delta sand bar system which occurs at the entrance of the Tauranga Harbour. Get to the island by boat. Perfect A-frame super hollow barrels. Likes any swell North through East with a 20kt offshore.

A good mate of mine flew over this morning for the semi's and is staying at his inlaws at the Mount - I told him to leave his boards behind and take some gloves for the clean up instead.

very very sad day.

Don't think they have got the same eyes as us Tux could have happened over your way too ,it sailed from Fremantle . Cut a few corners to save the dollar . I have worked on a few log boats that come in here over the years some are just rust buckets . Back in 2002 we had one parked on the beach here but there was no oil problem ,think we are still paying for that one

yep TB the Queenslanders had themselves a nice spill in Apil last yr when a Chinese coal carrier tried to take a shortcut through the Great Barrier Reef. They should have thrown away the key on those guys I reckon. I am a keen supporter of harsher penalties for environmental harm - personal responsibility. As Ironphill would say - if you want play you have to pay.

Yeah but sadly the penalty is very light

"He's to appear in the Tauranga District Court this morning and faces a charge under section 65 of the Maritime Transport Act. The charge under s65 carries a maximum penalty of $10,000, or a maximum term of imprisonment of 12 months. "

That seems a little on the light side to me. No doubt his company / ship owners will have to pay a fair bill to mop up the mess etc but 10k does not seem to offer much of a deterent I reckon. Do we know not nationality he is yet?

Yeah but 70 containers just fell off and into the ocean, apparently some of those containers (not sure if the same ones which fell off) have hazardous substances in That's terrible, Mount Maunganui and papamoa are beautiful beaches. A lot of marine life will suffer.

Hey Chrispy I agree that the owners need a good old fashioned bollocking as well - but the captain must take responsbility as well......its not like a taxi driver who knowingly drives a car with bad brakes can blame the owner of the taxi when he has an accident......if he knows it has bad brakes then he needs to stop driving it.

i missed one word in that. why just arrest the captain ultimately the owners should face the heaviest penalty. unfortunately i have worked for companies that know things are not right and your choices are slim. not just a set of break pads. if he has been negligent in what route he has taken etc, smash him. the captain does have a case to answer either way. yet i do believe the company is the one sending people out. the amount of damage done to our oceans is abhorrent, and we as people only get to see the big ones. makes me sad.

I hear ya Chrispy!!

I have just seen this ship on the news and the pictures look bleak. Terrible.

Hey TB - I recall yr buddy Logan Murray - he was a legend photographer many moons ago and I remember being inspired by his shots many a time. NZ's first real surf photographer. I shall see if I can get one of the family to send me that book over for Christmas. Actually my birthday is before then so maybe I can get it sooner ha ha ha

Thanks for the tip. Please pass on my thanks to him for all the mighty fine images he shared all those years ago.

Hey I have just done a search and can not find any place that stocks it - apparently it is out of stock everywhere with some sites saying its out of print. If you see him can you please ask him if he knows where I can purchase one from. I am happy to do this ASAP.

Cheers.

Yeah those video's of the containers swaying were insane. Looks like thigns are going from bad to worse over there today.

Maritime New Zealand has closed Mount Maunganui Beach after four containers washed ashore overnight.

* Clean up crews have collected 50 tonnes of solid waste and five tonnes of liquid waste from 17 kilometres of shoreline.

* Authorities have warned Bay of Plenty residents living near beaches to keep their windows shut

I heard on the radio that the ship's owners can only be fined $500K max. Wow that seems a long way short of what wd seem fair and equitable to me. That area is tourist central from Dec through to April.......one can only imagine the unintended consequences on residents and businesses after this. Looks like Jonny Keys will need to send another disaster relief package. Ahhhhhhhh Well our boys had better win this weekend to brighten them up.

Hows this for a drop in?

ted they are just as worried that its going to screw one of your major shipping ports and channels. insufficent fine, maybe a civil lawsuit could help. or authorities that check these ships should be prosecuted as well. good luck cuzzy bros

Sad to see all the wild life thats been killed so far . There is a Chev Comaro floating around in one of those containers apparently . One thinks for sure along with the Christchurch earthquake it's going to cost us big time

NZ closes oil-affected beaches

Officials dealing with the oil spill from the stricken ship Rena grounded on a reef off New Zealand's Tauranga coast are urging the public not to interfere with the clean-up operation.

Beaches from Mount Maunganui to Maketu estuary were closed from noon on Thursday to allow workers to remove oil and containers that have washed ashore from the 47,000-tonne ship.

Maritime New Zealand's Nick Quinn said it was important the 500 people tackling the clean-up were free to do their job.

"We understand the public curiosity but safety is our top priority so please let us get on with the job.

"We'd also ask people to be patient while we deal with what's coming ashore.

"The restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of the public, and to ensure our trained responders and volunteers can get on with cleaning up this oil," he said.

Papamoa Beach is the worst affected by oil.

Volunteers are being trained to supervise other helpers remove the oil and will help with the clean-up on Friday.

More than 1000 have volunteered to help.

Several of the 88 containers lost overboard from the ship have washed ashore, one containing the hazardous substance ferrosilicon, and 48 of those in the sea are empty.

Three salvage experts have been winched onto the Rena to assess damage and the state of equipment used to transfer oil from the ship, while the barge Awanuia is ready to receive the 1300 tonnes of heavy fuel oil thought to still be on the ship.

Maritime New Zealand's salvage manager Bruce Anderson said the oil removal would be harder after the damage to the Rena but said a crack in the hull hadn't progressed since Wednesday night, and there was no evidence of further oil coming from the vessel.

Six boats were operating in Tauranga Harbour picking up debris while sonar was being used to check the shipping lanes for submerged containers.

Environmental group Forest and Bird said more than 380 birds had been found dead but were a fraction of the number affected.

"The number of birds being found washed up on the beaches will be a very small proportion of the birds being affected," the group's seabird conservation advocate Karen Baird said.

Meanwhile, the ship's second officer appeared in Tauranga District Court on Thursday charged with operating a vessel in a manner causing unnecessary danger or risk, the same charge the ship's captain faced on Wednesday.

Both have been granted name suppression and bailed after surrendering their passports.
