Given the self explainatory names of these boards I feel a bit stupid asking this question.

I spent the last two mornings surfing a clean little beachie on a borrowed 9ft foamy (like the surf schools use). Now I think I want to buy a mal.

I found a second hand performance mal from a credible local shaper but I am put off a bit by the "performance" label.

Does a performance mal still allow you to run up and down the board, and ride the nose?

I am not looking to rip on this thing, I just want to have fun catching heaps of waves. I only plan to ride it when the surf is not suited to my SBs. (ie:fat or small)

Or may be I should just buy a foamy like the one I have been on for the last couple of days...

If you already surf well, then try some 9'1 performance boards, or all rounders. You can still opt to cruise.

I've been riding a 9'3 performance LB over summer. I was pretty keen to noseride small waves coz its a bit hard to get vert on one foot of face lol...but now we're starting to get some size & I'm really finding the sweet spots on my board I'm preffering to hit the lip, float & working on tightening figure 8's. But I can't hang ten on it, only managed to squat down & stick one foot out onto the nose. So really depends on what is really most important to you I reckon, the waves your riding & of course the board you choose (not gonna be the same as mine).

If the waves aren't often fat & over waste height then a performance if you want to throw the board around. An allrounder if your keen to throw the board around a bit & noseride. A dedicated noserider if thats your main priority...& a log, if your still riding SB's I doubt is for you mate...no matter what you choose you'll get heaps of waves, surf more often & have a great time in conditions you judged to be **** with your SB eyes lol...just beware, they're highly addictive

Long story short I'd agree with Simondo, performance or allrounder.

Just an opinion Craigus.
More cruisy and a short board for size. Performance mals will get you up and running but in clean 1 to 2 foot a cruisier mal will give you so many options.
I use a 9'4" Dino Miranda Surftech, works in beach breaks, because of the tail and nose rides and cruises really well. When it gets bigger , I use a 6'3" Van Straalen twinnie. (I am an old fart).
The two blue boards are mine

Will take some shots. She has had a tough life. Bought new, by overseas tourists and they must have hit every rock coming down the coast. Mate picked it up for a couple of hundred got it repaired and it was a bit small for him and I adopted her.
I think, called a Hydro Hull, concave bottom, concave deck, great little board. Very impressive shaper is Mr Van Straalen.
