Its a definite trend with high performance longboards these days not to have a finbox - just a 3 fin plug setup.
This is a pic of the Harley Ingleby "world title" model shaped by Billy Tolhurst that we just got in. And its a triple stringer to boot, cos you're gonna need some extra strength wielding that baby around like big shorty!
Steve Del Rosso at Clearwater is mostly doing this type of setup too on his performance boards, as is Tully St John up at Laguna Bay longboards.
I rode Mark McNamara's and Clint Guest's finbox-less Clearwaters recently and what really surprised me was how relatively stable they were on the nose, given the lack of fin volume/hold compared to what I would normally have on my fin-box longboard. Its made me re-think my whole setup. Damn it!
Anyway, plenty of Pro's and Cons here. Definitely not for logging though. What are you thoughts? - Mark

the fins would be still sharp either way im actually surprised it hasnt been done earlier by someone. does cut out the ability to muck around with placement though. would it cut out any drag at all by having all plugs? very sex board, very sexy

I 'spose instead of fin placement you would just put in bigger or smaller fins to suit the conditions. Allows you to use a lot more fin combo's and the fins from your shortboards. If its a custom order you can always get the shaper to put in a third centre fin plug so you can have your centre fin up or back a bit.
As for drag I reckon it would cut it down a little bit cos you don't have the weight of a fin box or the size/volume of a normal longboard fin.
A lot of the pro's now have this setup (mainly for manoueverability) so there are advantages to it. Does take a little getting used to though. - Mark
PS - hobble in some time and check out that sexy board. I'll even bring it downstairs so you don't have to limp your way up!

I just brought the HP Model single stringer in Yellow ! Looks just like it. Has a thruster set up with fin box but the centre fin is small and good quality. I love it. Nose riding has been no problem with no slippage as yet. I've come of an 8 footer with full thruster set up and shorties. The 8 footer did slip a little when on the nose but I could live with that for better turning perfomance. I'll up load some pics. I must say I need to replace the side fins in the Tolhurst as they arn't great quality as opposed to the board which is.

These are in boxes but can be moved 1/4 inch.
Tolhurst's designs are unreal. I had one of his quads a few years back and his 9'1 hp in tufflite.

Yeah, we have a couple of his quads and the 9'1 tuflite too - an awesome board. I had one myself for over 5 years and tried hard but just couldn't break it! - Mark

You got some nice boards there Mark . I'll definately call in one day when I'm up there when we visit some friends and family up that way.
Do you have bouncers that deal with those pesky glass job testers ?

Thanks SMH. Re bouncers, not quite, but we have 14 cctv cameras around the place so if anyone has a go i just call Mac upstairs (where all the boards are), assuming i can get him away from the coffee machine! - Mark

....and not to mention all the coffee he can swill and all the wax he can eat. Anyway, the cameras work fine, especially the secret one the boys setup up in the girls changeroom. Problem was they all vomited when they reviewed the cctv tapes and found Mac trying on a pink mankini! - Mark
