I have a Mc Tav Fireball EVO II and love it BUT at times on bigger waves I need a better paddler to get me on the wave without loss of performance once on a wave.

From a bit of discussion it seems I may need a little less rocker than the EVOII but what I am not sure about is that is a 3 stage rocker the way to go or a continuous rocker from about mid board with flatter rocker towards the nose?

I look foward to constructive suggestions, thankyou

I imagine the resident 2 McT lovers on this forum will be over this post. One im-particular given the theoretical nature of the question

Mate I have been lazy and should have done a review on my sdr. Mine has more rocker than grandma's chair.I have learnt to find the sweet spots on it and can surf it in all conditions. Sue if you can afford another for the quiver do it. Yet for me,when it's fat,I just move further up the board and all is sweet. That is just me though. Try a few different paddling positions and see how it goes.I do like the fact when I'm on them the banana board is sweet. Just a kooks opinion so might not count

ok, fins down for starters. also fins to the back where your feet are, but remember fins down in the water. surfboards go really good this way

I just can't get off my 9'6 Pin!
Continuous rocker for guns.
Low tail rocker gives you amazing squirt speed but harder to turn.
Obviously too much rocker will slow down paddle speed.

My favourite guns have a flatter panel from the side bites forward for about 2 feet. Fast flatter panel under the feet. And easy to rock back onto the tail for turns. Shallow 3 stage rocker... Almost continuous rocker.

I wish I could bottle the stoke I'm getting from surfing at the moment. Brilliant Autumn sessions down here boys!

Talk to your shaper and ask him to amke you a board with lower entry rocker and dicuss adding some forward v under the chest area thia will increase you paddle speed considerably...

Had some initial discussion with a shaper and getting excited.

Now just need to meet up and decide on design.

The best rocker is my major delima but I feel I will be well guided.

Again thx for the constructive input.

Hi Tdog

Thankyou for your interest and here are some answers to your questions:

My McT is the sports version as McT describe of the Fireball EVO and it mostly works for me but need help with wave catching on the bit bigger waves.

My EVO II is 9' 1" lg x 22 7/8" wide x 2 7/8" thk, it is their lighter weight version with 6/4 cloth and 6 oz and I am 76kg - and not that young.

I am just back into surfing after a long time but have been doing windsurfing and now kite surfing for the last 12 years plus 2 yrs on Stand Up Paddle in surf. I just love all of it.

My thinking ATM is 22 1/2" wide x 2 3/4" thk, continuos rocker curve from the middle to the tail and less rocker towards the nose plus concave from nose to double concave towards the tail.

What do u think?

Hey Warwick

I'm also on the EVO II, pretty much same dims as yours but a bit narrower at 22 3/4", and I'm about 86 kg, also bit older & not the strongest paddler atm due to shoulder bursitis.

I think a flatter rocker right through the mid section (which the EVOII has) is good for paddling, as long as your chest is back a bit, so you're over this flat section. This would be improved by a somewhat flatter nose rocker.

Need to be careful with flatter rocker in the nose section though when the wave is steeper on take off (to avoid pearling). The flatter nose rocker would help you paddle but you'd need to be back enough on take off to lift the nose using a good amount of tail rocker. Simondo's "shallow 3 stage rocker" set up sounds like a better way to go.

I can see that you're thinking of gunnier dims for the new board (narrower, not as thick) but this means less volume and you need more for paddling!

Some ideas to discuss with shaper are possibility of - decreasing width to maybe 22 1/2 or 3/4" but increasing thickness to say 3 1/8 or 1/4" and possibly increasing length ( to maybe 9'4") to give more volume. Somewhat fuller rails would also provide more volume.

If you're wanting this board for say 4-6'+ waves I think you'd learn to use the power of the wave to compensate for the bigger board size and help with your turns. Seems like Simondo's loving his 9'6" pin for the bigger stuff down south. He posted dims of that board on an earlier thread of mine - looks like 9'6"x22 1/2 x 3 1/4.

You should actually think along these lines...

As a "Step-Up" Longboard, think rounded pin, pointier nose, meaty for paddle speed, and about 4-6 inches longer than you normal ride.

Board now ordered and should have it within 2 weeks.

Specs did change a bit once I visited the shaper and showed him my current board and discussed more fully what I hoped to achieve.

Left field- I own a McCoy alrounder- 9'2", rounded pin, single fin, 3 1/4' thick, average rocker, thick rails (loaded dome bottom- check website)- this thing is a bigger wave ripper- feels stiff on smaller ones, put paddles well/early entry. Will handle anything I am game to attempt with ease.
