I would suggest a few lessons to start with just from a safety and learning the basics point of view. A lot easier when everyone around you is in the same boat. Then you can get brave and have a crack yourself. If your mates board is a shorter one have a crack on that as well as the lessons just to sort out exactly what you want to ride. A good place for Lessons is Lancelin about an hour north of Quinns.
As far as spots go there is the beachies along scarborough and Trigg which can be fun but be warned about the crowds if your beginning. There are rules that will keep you out of trouble, too many to list, have a search on the net for details. Also winter is coming and it can get nasty so a little common sense should be exercised in the ocean or you could become a statistic!
Caution in my life thus far (all 40 yrs of it) have allowed me to avoid being a stat, thus this if probably the most sound advice on this tread - so far. Will check out some schools. Play it safe.
In prior activities which I undertook it was norm to knock out the leader of a group to get some respect from the rest, but that obviously will be poor form when trying to surf on someone else's turf. Or is it? (to all sensitive folk, this is a joke,
or not)
The reason I asked this question in the first place is to avoid the crowds, so I dont upset anyone's sensitivites. I dont like crowds and am not trying to get in any real surfers' way.
