Hi all,
I'm new to it. Never lived near the ocean, so new to everything about it - it just looks sooo cool! I have to try it. A mate got me a broken board and repaired it, now I have to try ride it.
Where would a novice start around the Quinns Rocks area - I don't want to upset anyone by spoiling their sesh. Also, are there any rules about right-of-way on a wave, or any other rules I should be aware of?
Also, please assit me in avoiding the group of blokes who might perhaps be into sky-diving, bank robbery and excessive partying with cute babes - I'd hate to get caught up in that shi'te.
:)

Why not hunt around in your area for a surf school and have a couple of lessons on a soft top.

You may even decide it would be a good idea to invest in a cheap soft top even for a few months until you get the hang of it.

That board your mate is doing may be a good one but if it does not have a lot of volume, you may not catch too many waves and that's either going to turn you right off the game or significantly extend your learning time.

I'm sorry but all the members of this forum are heavily into skydiving, bank robbing and especially partying with hotties.

(I wish )

I would suggest a few lessons to start with just from a safety and learning the basics point of view. A lot easier when everyone around you is in the same boat. Then you can get brave and have a crack yourself. If your mates board is a shorter one have a crack on that as well as the lessons just to sort out exactly what you want to ride. A good place for Lessons is Lancelin about an hour north of Quinns.

As far as spots go there is the beachies along scarborough and Trigg which can be fun but be warned about the crowds if your beginning. There are rules that will keep you out of trouble, too many to list, have a search on the net for details. Also winter is coming and it can get nasty so a little common sense should be exercised in the ocean or you could become a statistic!

Yeah, send more people to Scarborough and Trigg. It's a bit quiet around there .

There you go LostDog your first little hurdle before you start, metro crowd loathing
Judge it for yourself and enjoy it no matter where you start out but just make sure you have a look at the basic laws of surfing a peak (or metro closeout)

Caution in my life thus far (all 40 yrs of it) have allowed me to avoid being a stat, thus this if probably the most sound advice on this tread - so far. Will check out some schools. Play it safe.

In prior activities which I undertook it was norm to knock out the leader of a group to get some respect from the rest, but that obviously will be poor form when trying to surf on someone else's turf. Or is it? (to all sensitive folk, this is a joke, or not)

The reason I asked this question in the first place is to avoid the crowds, so I dont upset anyone's sensitivites. I dont like crowds and am not trying to get in any real surfers' way.
