Has anyone ever done it??

I am potentially returning to uni and may be heading inland. Will I survive??

Nearest surf is 2 hours away

Don't do it. Simple. Find somewhere else to study :)

What are you studying?

I spent four years 400km from the coast in my late 20s. My surfing improved markedly in that time and I surfed the biggest waves comfortably of my life. I had a couple of surf buddies and we did regular weekend road trips. I also was fit as I was cross training for surfing.

You also get a heap of holidays to get your surf fix at uni.

I agree Ted - I shouldn't go inland. More research is needed I think..... Mac - QLD is a tough one for me, I love the state but absolutely hate crowds and would go insane sharing waves with 1000 of my new mates hahaha. But it is probably better than being a full blown weekend warrior.

Tough decisions....

As someone who lives 1.5 hours from the beach each way I can tell you it is hard to get out often. Not to mention if you have a family or other commitments. By the time you load up get there, get ready, surf, load up and chat after surf it is an all day affair. I would personally avoid it but thats just my opinion.

Thanks Lads - I am mentally struggling with the idea. I think I will need to research the notion some more and convince my wife to change her city preferences.

Goldy is seeming more and more tempting though!!!

Like McHenry, I'm 1h20min from the beach and for the most part a 'weekend warrior'. However I've convinced myself that I enjoy it just as much, don't take it for granted and find myself prepared to surf whatever is on offer when I arrive.

Do whatever you need to mate to set yourself up for the years to come when you may be well positioned to live wherever you want to and do it all comfortably.

Vanders as usual has very sound advice. Study hard get a good job and locate yourself close to the beach with a nice pay packet..

How many birthday cakes you racked up Leashy?

Brisbane might work for you? UQ, QUT, Griffith, ACU.. 1 to 2 hours from the Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast depending on where you are. Then you've got the bay close to home, take up kiting/windsurfing.

I'm with these boys. Because of my time away I live a one minute drive or five minute walk from the coast now. I am still 20 minutes from a surf beach though.

I am 7 minutes from work. And I work every day.

It's also made me keep grom keenness for the last 16 years.

I know a few blokes who live in the Sutherland shire who travel south an hour plus to avoid weekend crowds and then there are blokes living down south of Sydney (and I imagine the central coast) whose commuting for work doesn't allow them enough time to surf through the week anyway. Not an easy call this one but I'd consider the long term picture as my priority.

I lived away from the coast for nearly 6 years and it was nearly the end of me...moving back to the beach has been the 3rd best decision of my life...I'm fitter less mentally unstable (depending on how much I have surfed) and have a good balance between work and home life....

The musings of an "old fart" on this topic.
One of my postings was to an Aboriginal settlement in the middle of Australia. When there, I could empathise with the convicts of "Botany Bay" believing if they crossed the Blue Mountains they would be in China as I often felt that if I crossed the hills on the horizon I would see the ocean!
I lasted 10 months!

First up, if it's Canberra, No.

This q makes me think how selfish a sport is surfing? I read that Barbarian life a while back and he makes a pint of discussing what a selfish pursuit surfing is where Life decisions are made a recreational pursuit as a very major consideration.
First world problems eh.... No offense to the OP. I do it myself, holidays are always need the ocean etc..

For me make the best decision for your future, the ocean isn't going anywhere but Uni means a bit of free time and plenty of chance to surf so i'd be looking for an education option near the ocean.

I surfed heaps during Uni the lived in Sydney for a few years was 5 minutes from the ocean but felt like being inland.. Hardly surfed just worked.

Lasted a few years and then moved home had 6 months off, surfed everyday. Washed the filth off me but would do it again at that time in my life, got me in a good track for the future..
