Wife & I are heading down to Melbourne for 4 days, I thought I'd check with those in the know as to the goods pubs, wine bars, must do restaurants etc???

We normally chill at the Young & Jackson but thought we'd check out a few others so any advise would be appreciated.

Staying at The Sofitel on Collins, always a great stay there.

Yes, Soffitel and Chloe's Bar at Young & Jacksons are great starters!

I'm in Hawaii so I can't offer extra hospitality.

There are a few nice lunch options along South Bank. Good value lunches mid week. They all run lunch specials... $20 to $25 main including a beer or house red or white... Not sure on weekend prices.

Corner of Little Bourke and Brown Alley has 3 options... Italian, Japanese, and a good contemporary Aussie Pub.

Healeys Lane is worth checking out. Nice lane near Brown Alley.

Hardware Lane is more famous and worth a look.

Top end of Hardware Lane, you have Guildford Lane. Check maps, they don't connect, and are at 90 degrees... But it is interesting. 2 lanes on each side also. Includes cute little motorbike servicing factories, including Moto Guzzi. Feels very European through there...

Walk down Brown Alley also... North end has the old original blue stone cobbles and a feature archway. Plus old Bluestone buildings and a quaint Piazza mid way along.

Good choice Vanders - thats the hotel I stay in when I am there normally. Love it. Out the backdoor, down the escalators, across the road and 20m down the road on Flinders Lane and you will find the best place for breaky in all of Australia

cumulusinc.com.au/menu/breakfast/

Make sure you attempt the Shakshouka - baked eggs with roasted peppers and shanklish. Simply amazing. Actually there whole menu is. Here is my Shakshouka I had a few weeks back

One of my other fav spots for a feast is a place called Meatballs - yep!! Heaven. Its also on Flinders but about 4 blocks down. Basically choose your meatball of choice, then the sauce, then the base - if you are with a few people its great as you can get lots of diff options. I love them all!!

www.meatballandwinebar.com.au

Here is my last feast from there - I shared this!!!! True

The menu to excite you......

And the room with the view - the lady will love Sofietel!!!! I can not wait to get back down there in late August.

What else?

Well I always love going for a walk up and down the Yarra. Some nice bars as well to check out along the way. Always something interesting to look at. Although I would advise you to rug up for your journey as it will be bloody cold! ! ! The DFO above Spencer Street station (now Southern Cross) is always good for a bargain or 2 as well. Hope you and lady have a nice break.

Mac, give us a shout when you're down. If I'm in the city we should have a quick ale.

I wanted to go Tux's suggestion meat mother but did not make it that far today. Glad I saved this thread fellas - thanks for your inputs!

Chin Chin is the bomb, went there after watching a game at the G, was about 11.30 and it was pumping. Good rum menu as well.
